Does Warmoth do custom colours?

G'day from Australia.

For my next project i'm wanting a finish that falls somewhere between Mary Kaye white and Butterscotch Blonde.  Will Warmoth do this for me, and any idea of the surcharge (if any).

I'd ask them directly, but I thought a 24/7 forum might give me a faster answer.

In short, no.  If you're looking for something that warmoth does not do, it's best to find some one else to paint it.  The best on the forum is Tonar.  He's done a lot of guitars for me and others.  Top knotch and highly recommended.

BTW, colors can look very different in person than a photo.  If possible I'd look at an example of both in person.  You might be surprised how different they look and it might be possible that either might be closer to your color that you thought.

FYI, this is a slower-paced unofficial forum. Calling really is quicker and easier.

In any case, they might be able to do it for you if you ask nicely.

I asked them about a custom finish they said yes to. I've also asked about ones they said no to. They were straight about why they wouldn't or what to expect if they would and quoted the price. They got back to me with in a day too. Just my experience.

Somebody whose name escapes me got a custom hot rod flame finish on a Strat or Soloist several years back. Don't know what he paid for it, though. I suspect it was expensive. I asked for a Blue Ice neck a couple years ago, and they were willing to do it, but again, it was pricey enough to discourage.

I'd ask Tonar if he's up for it. Not only do I know he could do it, I know he'd do a fantastic job.

I think it also has to do with how busy they are.

I once asked them to replicate something that they'd already done in the showcase:

They said they would, for (if I remember correctly) around $50 more than a standard burst. I ended up falling in love with something else in the showcase, though.

Just got official word back from Warmoth - 'no' is their answer.

Thanks for the alternative suggestions guys, but I live in Australia - far easier to sort out any custom paint desired locally than in a foreign land.

With those particular finishes, bear in mind that any white (or other pale) finish will turn more yellow over time. A Mary Kaye finish typically starts to show signs of yellowing within a year. So, if you want something more yellow than Mary Kaye but less yellow than Butterscotch, you may simply be best off getting a Mary Kaye finish and letting it yellow naturally.

Also, I highly recommend you check out Wudtone finishes. I believe they do have a proper Australian distributor, though I forget the name. You can rub their finishes on yourself very easily—far cheaper than having somebody else spray a finish—and their white finish with the aged top coat is a good way to get that slightly-yellow finish. They also do a butterscotch finish and you can mix their finishes in any ratio you like, so you could mix the white and butterscotch finishes to produce exactly the colour you want. Their finishes aren't a full, rock hard gloss finish, but if you don't mind the worn-in, thin look, they're a great option.

If I recall that distributor in Oz was called Pitbull or at least something like it.

They don't distribute any more http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=2633

But I believe they do their own range Dingotone (  :occasion14: ) http://www.pitbullguitars.com/dingotone/

I've just bought a Wudtone t-bird kit for a Strat body I picked up from Guitarbuild.co.uk in their 'Blackfriday' sale. Looking forward to trying it out. Can't seem to get an actuate photo of the colour,  even in the view finder of my camera it looked more blue than the object.  :icon_scratch:
