This came up again at my other home, again.

"Waah! Scales are so boring!"

Again. Well of course scales are boring, even a little kid playing with alphabet blocks knows you don't just play A-B-C-D-E etc. I do think it's useful to know some run-ups for that amazing Morsian btl-dtl-dtl-dtl-BANG! you pop out right where you want to be - kinda all thrilling-like.

But for the most part, just going up and down a couple octaves of a scale is doggy work, you do it when your mind is just dead. But if you want to play musically -  what the hell, why not? - scale fragments are de bomb. I don't know who-all knows this stuff already.

This:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-5-4, 4-5-6 -> ascending triplets going up
3-2-1, 4-3-2, 5-4-3, 6-5-4 -> descending triplets going up

1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5, 3-4-5-6 -> ascending 4's going up
4-3-2-1, 5-4-3-2, 6-5-4-3 -> descending 4's going up

8-7-6, 7-6-5, 6-5-4, 5-4-3- > descending triplets going down
8-7-6-5, 7-6-5-4, 6-5-4-3 -> descending 4's going down

1-3-5, 2-4-6, 3-5-7, 4-6-8-> ascending chord triplets going up
5-3-1, 6-4-2, 7-5-3, 8-6-4, (9)-7-3-> descending chord triplets going up

1-3-5-7, 2-4-6-8, 3-5-7-9-> ascending chord 4's going up
(10)-8-6-4, (9)-7-5-3, 7-5-3-1 -> descending chord 4's going down

I'm leaving some out....

And 2'sies skipping various intervals:

1-3, 2-4 , 3-5->
1-4, 2-6, 3-7->

It's called “harmonizing in ~blank~”
it'll work in 3rds, 4ths, 5ths and 6ths, primarily.
Ascending intervals going up
descending intervals going up
ascending intervals going down
descending intervals going down
---------------------------------------------------------------
Oughta keep you out of the bars and the fridge, for a few hours at least. :icon_scratch:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I consider all the modes of a single scale to be that same scale - F major IS D minor IS A Phrygian IS E Locrian etc. Holdsworth uses ten distinct scales that aren't modes of each other, but you can largely get by with DO-RE-MI, the harmonic minor, double harmonic minor, symmetric half/whole step, and all the modes therein. Which might even keep you out of the bars and the fridge for even a few more hours... :toothy12:
