Howdy everyone!
I’m coming back to an old Esquire build that’s only short a body. I failed miserably at a DIY prep-and-nitro-from-the-ground-up finish before and want this to be as simple and straightforward a build for me in that regard. Currently, I have one rattle can of sonic blue and one of clear nitro that I need to go ahead and use. I also have blush remover on hand, as well as containers of clear nitro for spray use (although I’m not interested in spraying that much nitro again!).
An idea that stood out to me was purchasing a swamp ash DIY paint-ready Tele body from Warmoth, then using what I have on hand to shoot a simple coat of sonic blue, with the idea that it would probably age in like a thin-skin finish.
All that being said, I really like the idea of a swamp ash Tele body that has natural grain coming through the solid sonic blue. Does anyone have experience with a DIY paint-ready on swamp ash with a minimal nitro finish over top? Do you get any grain, or does the the sanding and finishing from the DIY paint-ready prep leave a truly flat surface without grain detail? I like the idea of this guitar aging in over the years the way a factory poly or nitro finish might not.
Also, If the above proves to be feasible, should I shoot just the sonic blue, or follow up with some clear nitro on top? Again, trying to go for a thin-skin sort of thing here, but don’t know how an opaque finish will fare on its own without a clear coat on top.
I’d appreciate any input y’all have to offer. Pardon my ignorance and thank you for taking the time to read!
