Diy maple neck finish

Following the garage sale, I got 3 unfinished maple necks, and I know others did too. So here we start with the predelivery anxiety about how we gonna proceed. 2 have rosewood fretboard and I am pretty sure I am sposed to tape off the fretboard, but,(quantum theory) what happens if you finish the rosewood? And another thing, I want to experiment with liquid pigment, any chemist tell me what to use as a carrier agent? Ps, I paid slow postage so plenty of time to discuss, I am thinking tru oil.

Rickenbacker has been lacquering their (Bubinga, Padauk, etc) fretboards for decades... Rosewood should work much the same
