I've always preferred the detail retention of lower wound pickups, and it wasn't until I got my ADA-MP1 back in 1989 that I ditched all stomp disto's.
Nowadays, you can push the amp a bit without over compressing it by opting for underwound active pickups like the EMG 57/66 set. You get the detail, you get the front end amp kick, but you retain all the headroom.
Gone are the days where a Dimarzio X2N was necessary to get the gain desired from an older Marshall amp.
