So on Gibson's new website you have to click on the drop down thing for allowing cookies. For me - no big deal, but for a longtime client of mine with about 10 expensive Gibsons (several are Custom Shop items and archtops like a Wes Montgomery L-5)) - he's pissed. He won't click on the damn thing to see what's new with them. Fender doesn't track you, Taylor wants to, but will let you look anyway, Ibanez is free and clear, etc. He just has his standards, and won't by God submit.

You have an opinion?

It depends on the site and what the cookies are for. Not all cookies are bad, some are needed for sites to function.

Regulations such as GDPR now mean that sites have to say they use cookies and do you consent. Most people prior to that just ended up with them.

If you want to go to a site and accept its cookies so you can use it without permanently storing them, try using Chrome Incognito mode as the cookies are not stored and will be gone as soon as you close the browser Incognito window.

I don't allow them, or scripts either for that matter, until I have some history with the site.  Been down the security rat-hole at work several times and had some scares as well.  No one runs automatically.

Interestingly Unofficial Warmoth needs a script or two running or you can't quote someone's post.

I have no problem clicking on most of these cookie warnings....  But my client is rather rigid on the subject. He won't use Google at all, preferring Duck Duck Go or Start Page for his browsing needs. He won't buy off Amazon.... He gets ME to do it (we've known each other since grade school).

One thing I will NOT do is whitelist any webpage. I don't turn my ad blocker off for anyone.

I remember in the 90's when the FBI started omnivore and carnivore (they've since moved on to bigger and better mass surveillance), the client doesn't know it, but we got bigger problems than the Gibson website.

Cookies
Pshh....cookies are old news. Like, really old news. Pretty much any commercial site uses them. The Warmoth site uses them. The only thing new about them is the notification pop ups, which are happening now because of recently enacted laws in Europe. Companies are either trying to conform with the EU laws since their sites are viewed there, or get ahead of what they feel will eventually become law everywhere.

Google
I am conflicted on Google. To me, the search engine is now simply an ad dispenser....much like my physical mailbox. But I sure do like their help navigating through traffic.

Amazon
Owns my soul. Though I am sick to death of breaking down boxes.

The Orwellian future we all feared is here. There is no opting out. Resistance is futile. If you are reading this you have already been assimilated.

In addition to the old run-of-the-mill cookies, there are also LSO cookies. They are flash cookies and much more potentially dangerous because they don't give you the option to allow or not. I use the browser extension Privacy Badger to get rid of invisible trackers.

And in some cases I allow cookies or scripts. Like with UW. Thanks for bringing that up, Mayfly.

I send all the websites I visit DNA samples. It's either that or wear a tinfoil hat.

Me too. It's nice to just get it out of the way, right up front.

Tinfoil hats aren't too bad. They even can be made for special occasions or holidays.

I think my guy uses one of those programs that changes your IP address... Maybe he's being overcautious?

You still get a warm plate of cookies if you use a #vpn but they're only valid so long as you keep using that IP number or whatever. If you reset to a different vpn node then the website has to start fresh with you. Trust me im a juggalo

I also only use the Brave web browser with DuckDuckGo search engine or the DuckDuckGo web browser app for iOS.

Cookies are NOT necessary for any web page to function and an easy way to let more harmful things in if a site wishes to track you and/or other applications (banking apps? fb has already been found guilty of this) and how you use them as well. Blocking all scripts can effect some functionality on some sites.
I also block all ads and cookies from all websites.

To hide your IP address you can also use a VPN which is handy to keep you completely anonymous.
incognito versions of Google, Facebook etc. have all been found to actually be complete bullcrap and they are not incognito at all. They still track you, as selling your information is what their business model is.

Well, just installed brave and set the default browser to duckduckgo.  so far, so good.

Dude, I don't trust you AT ALL.
hey, mellow, that's harsh. No need to be jealous just cause i was mentioned by name in the Monster Mash and was the first man to have a cesarean fart. Listen up, my friend Terrold (his first name is terry and middle name is harold) told me if you put a twizzler in your ear, you can hear the ocean. Well mine broke off and now I can't hear right and have to pay a $60 co-pay to have the doctor x-tract it. it doesn't sound like the ocean it sounds like a really slow car. if I wanted to hear that I'd just get in my own car and drive through a school zone. would somebody untrustworthy share such an embarrassing and shameful story on the internet, anonymously among friends? i'll send anybody here cookies for free. i luv u

I realize they're a fact of life, but I don't just accept them blindly. If I need something from a web site and it doesn't work without them, fine. But if I'm wandering the net and it doesn't work with my settings, I just go elsewhere. And I don't bother with websites that refuse to work with adblock either.

Been messing with Brave.  I like it!

I didn't know this, but it allows you to browse using Tor.  Now that's cool!!  Brave/Tor has become my default :)
