In 1986, Eric Johnson made me realize what a great guitar player I would never be.

That flexidisc from Guitar Player almost made me quit, until I figured out the pedal-tone part of the intro and redeemed myself...

I've always preferred this 1984 Austin City Limits live version to either the studio or live DVD version.

Can anyone point me towards a decent (preferably legit) digital version of it?

As always, thanks in advance.

I agree wholeheartedly, I had the flex-disc and that version smoked the recorded version; more energy, better tone, more spontanious.  I've never liked the recorded version he did some 4 years later.

Cliffs of Dover?

What, no dropped-D, full-step down, start out playing clean then release the angry bees-in-a-bottle distortion, one-finger barre chord song excursions?  :toothy10:

Cheers to you for digging/mentioning a tune that actually requires practice and talent to play.  :icon_thumright:

A damn fine tune, indeed.

Here, too, is a fine one to compliment the "1990" vintage:

That whole concert, loaded one at a time by drchronos, is quite peppy. :hello2:

It's hard to classify his playing...It's just so safe.
He's awseome and all, but I just find him a bit too well mannered.
On the other hand, he always seems so JOYFUL!

BTW "Nu-Metal" is old.

They toured together, were very good friends and seemingly, hit upon the same fashion statement simultaneously. There have been arguments back and forth - "who zoomed who?"  Umm... life is short.... :icon_tongue:

You can hear the 1984 version here:

The audio is cr@p, because it's a decades-old flexidisc mic'ed by a webcam,  but you can hear how much better this version is. It's definitely not safe.

I hope it's self-evident why I'd love to find a devent audio version of this one!

Erich Zahn or what?
Ok, ok...that rips!
I like the fact that it sounds like a real guy, really playing. That recording had so much soul and joy. The studio stuff is all I've heard, and this IS much better.
I may be a convert!

I give up.. it's impossible to find the 84 one besides the youtube you posted.. which I listened to a few times while I searched.. great stuff!!!

Wow, I had that (and may still have) sound page.  I wish I still had that issue (Who is Eric Johnson?)  :(

And, I thought I was the only one who thought that Austin City Limits version was the best "Cliffs of Dover"; leaps and bounds better than the Ah Via Musicom version.

I just have to share this...

I went over to the EJ discussion forum to see if anyone posted about this particular song. While there, I glanced at the description under Gear Talk from Forum Members:

"Questions about gear, pedals, batteries and amps and guitars and picks and on and on." (emphasis added)

So let's all remember this the next time we want to get carried away during discussions about tone minutiae like the tonal effects (or lack thereof) of non-reproduction/inaccurate rhythm pickup routs on strat bodies: There are people out there who go beyond even us!

Point taken.

Thanks for bringing us back to Earth. You're a cool Bison!

Why am I awake? It's 6:07 on a saturday morning...
The morning makes the mids stand out more :sign13:
