Cleaning finish off of a new neck?

I got my new neck in the post last week.  I have done a preliminary build, but don't want to start any setup process before I evaluate the frets.  What is the best way to remove the finish from SS frets (maple fretboard, so frets have lacquer over them.  I don't want to use steel wool or sandpaper for risk of damaging the finish.

you can lay tape down between the frets and use steel wool, or the old Leo Fender ghetto trick of a nail with a notch filed out of the edge of the nailhead.  Or you can start playing and let the strings abrade the finish off.

Yep. playing with exaggerated/aggressive string bends is what I have been doing.  Do you think a buffing wheel on a Dremel would get rid of any residue on the slopes of the frets?
