Clean/Stain finishes on Basswood? Anyone got em?

Considering it, but not sure about results. 

Thinking about black grain fill, then sand back, & light brownish reddish stain, sand back slightly, then clear.

Thoughts?
Pics?
 
Basswood is a very close-grained wood.  Grain fill is unnecessary and wouldn't stand out like on mahogany or ash in any event.  It's also unlikely to take a stain well. You're better off spraying with a toner.
 
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS seal the wood with a good wood sealer. I used DuPont 1980S. There are other good sealers. Ask your finish dealer, and I don't mean the clown at WalMart.

We have a very good woodworking store near us, Rockler affiliate, and they're very knowledgeable and helpful.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll do some research on the Dupont.
