Beautiful work, Mr. Orpheo! Those are some fine instruments you have created. You should be pleased and proud!

Thanks guys for the kind words! It's good to get some positive feedback. my ex-GF is being a pain in the rear-end when it comes to being even remotely positive so anything is welcome.

I'm proud on the looks and playability, but I'm not happy about the wiring. I want to use 3 pickups each with an independent volume pot, 1 master tone, and I want to be able to use the phat cat to get something quacky when I use that pot. but it just won't WORK and I'm getting a bit aggravated.

With the girlfriend, that's may be due to a (perceived or real) lack of attention. I know in the past when I tended to hyper-focus on something, the significant other suffered, so I suffered. A simple night out won't fix it; you need to make a concerted effort to assure her that she's the only thing in the world that means anything to you. That way, you're freed up to seek out targets of opportunity that more precisely align with your interests <grin>

As for getting "quack" out of humbuckers - good luck. Without some real ambitious wiring/switching tricks with just the right pickups, it may not be possible.

I know that it is possible. besides, the phat cat is a singlecoil ;) I can get very good quacky tones with my bill lawrence L500L and R humbuckers, for instance, and the pickups that are in the bridge and neck quack together like crazy. really amazing. but I want to use that middle pickup too.

about the EX: she's just a twat.

The middle pickup is a humbucker-sized P90.

Considering your setup, I'd love to hear how you manage to make those things quack.  Let me assure you there's a difference between single coils and P90's.  Maybe if you coil split the neck pick-up and find a way to use the neck and middle in parallel...

not to rain on your parade, but I (obviously) know what the phat cats are ;)

The bridge+ neck pickup quack like crazy but I don't know how. they just to. and I'm not even using coiltaps or something of the similar.

the pickups are all parallel whenever you get more than one pickup on. maybe having a coiltap will work, but the phat cat is just too raunchy and powerful for quack. too much mids. I think that it needs alnico5's, not alnico2's. but that's of later concern. Now I want independent volume controls.

Oh, wait... Okay, I misunderstood.  I was correcting Cagey as well when I said it was a humbucker sized P90.  I thought when you said it was a single coil, you were saying that you could get quack from it because it was a single coil, but you were just mentioning it to Cagey too.  I'm on the same page now I swear!

Definitely post a video.  I have yet to see a LP that can sound not like a LP.

Sorry, I don't do clips. It never sounds like it does in real life. They sound very much like uhm...me.  That might be a turn off but that's what they're meant to do. A huge part of quack is in technique. And pickups are there to help me achieve what I have in mind. The trick I discovered on these guitars is the phat cat + neck humbucker but the humbucker in parallel. I'll have the volumepot of the phat cat a bit lower than that of the humbucker and off you go. A good les Paul can quack, twang, sing and roar.

the wiring sucks. it really is terrible. the pickups sound great but it's too much of a hassle to switch the middle pickup (with its own volumepot) on or off. I had a 4 pole 2 way switch (fender s1) to switch that pickup on and coiltap the humbuckers, but it just didn't work. I want the humbuckers to be coiltapped too, without much of a hassle, and I also want the phat cat to be on and off, with either the pickups as humbucker or singlecoil. So I bought 2x4 new wenge knobs with a little screw to fix them to the pot (I don't like those slide on knobs) and I also have bought 2x2 push pull pots to turn on the phat cat and to coiltap the humbuckers. It will make switching so much easier. Now it takes up to 10 seconds to switch with this darned system!

That's why I always advocate simple wiring/control schemes. If you're just noodling around the house, that's one thing. But, if you're on stage playing a tune in front of an audience and you've got to think about what you're doing or spend too much time doing it, you're in deep, meaningful sheep dip. You haven't got time. Things gotta happen RFN. Why do you think they invented footswitches? So you don't have to stop what you're doing to monkey around.
