Changing nut size

With such a limited amount of necks that match my specs, what are plus and minus of buying a 43mm neck and filling a 42mm nut, would I end up with too wide a neck? Curious, but will wait for my specs for now.

(IMO) Nut that's half a mm smaller on either edge of the fretboard isn't going to bother any but the most OCD of us.
The neck width at the nut is more important to me than if the nut is not perfectly flush with the edge of the fretboard. Why not just buy whatever blank nut fits the neck? Are you trying to avoid nut slotting?

*Myself: a 41, 42, 43 mm nut width is tolerable - but I do prefer the 41 (FORTY FIVE IS RIGHT OUT!!)

I don't understand. You want to buy a 43mm (1.693") / 1-11/16 neck (1.6875, give or take a few thou due to manufacturing tolerances) and cut your own 42mm (1.654 / "1.650") spaced nut?

If you are somehow capable of cutting your nut that accurately, I would say that around .019" less on each side would not produce "too wide a neck".

Okay ... I probably shouldn't have posted while I was hangry. Rethinking this, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference what the nut width is if you are cutting your own slots. Make the string spacing whatever you want.

I just need to go to bed. @teleme01 always makes me think too hard for no reason ... :D .

it will give you more room on the fretboard. I know its only a few thousandths of an inch but this kind of thing can be a deal breaker or maker when you are deep in the world of fine tuning your playing.

Anecdote time, Jackson and Charvel necks are 2-1/4" wide at the butt end where it attaches to the body vs Fender 2-3/16" you wouldnt think that a mere 1/16" or 1.5mm would make a big difference but I sure can feel it when I am playing. The wider Charvel necks make getting a grip on the high E string for big bends just a little easier compared to my other Fender spec necks.
