Carvin Allan Holdsworth Model REVIEW

I finally got my Carvin Allan Holdsworth Model a few days ago. I'll break it up into Pros & Cons.

Pros

This has one of, if not the nicest, quilt maple top I have ever seen & the finish, which is antique brown, is amazing. The overall craftsmanship is as nice as humanly possible in a guitar. The frets work, PU height, action etc all were meticulously done. Bravo to the folks at Cravin!!!

Cons

This guitar was definitely built for someone else, namely Allan Holdsworth. The neck is HUGE with a ton on shoulder & the whole guitar is a tad neck heavy. I wanted the exact model Allan uses, which is alder body & neck w/ ebony fingerboard. This may work for Allan, but to me, it sounds very thin & lacking in bass & warmth. it's very even sounding, but just sounds 'not alive', for a lack of a better description. I've had to turn my bass up by 50% & reduce the treble by 50%. Using the settings that I normally have on my gear, which works with all of my other guitars just doesn't cut it with the H2. I have no idea what Allan does to get his amazing tone, but he has to be running a pre amp, EQ or something to add life to the tone.

The neck is also set very far out, even more so than an SG, which makes playing in the lower frets very difficult. It's almost like playing a baritone guitar.

Overall, it's really a quality, amazingly built, innovative instrument, but it's not for me. Perhaps if it was made out of mahogany with different PUs & a smaller neck, but then again, that wouldn't be the Holdswoth model.

Thankfully, Carvin offers a 10 day back guarantee, & as much as I REALLY want to keep this guitar, it's just too hard to play & the tone is too flat & lifeless for me.

This isn't Carvin's fault, as they followed Allan's instructions. It may be someone else's dream guitar, but unfortunately, that person isn't me. :(

Sounds good to me. Very holdsworth.

A bit dark for my tastes mind you...

... But I play a telecaster :headbang:

Looks gorgeous and sounds great (nice playing!), but if you're unhappy you're unhappy...

Beautiful guitar! But no sense in trying to trick yourself into trying to love a guitar you just can't connect with.

So are you going to order another Carvin instead? Now I'm excited to see what else you'll get haha

Believe me, I REALLY want to keep this guitar. It's beautiful & the quality is as good as you can get. However, it feels really foreign to me when I put it on. As soon as I let go, the neck heaviness kicks in & the neck starts to tilt downwards. The neck is set so far out that it actually starts to hurt my wrist to extend it to play close to the nut for long periods & it's so FAT. I mean HUGE with a ton of shoulder. This one is an oddity & I have no idea what Allan wanted it like this. He must have huge arms & hands.

Tonally, to get the kind of tone I like on the video, I had to turn my amp treble from 5 to 0, the bass from 5 to 9 & that wasn't enough so I turned the treble on my Xotic BB pedal from neutral to -3 & the bass from neutral to +5. This guitar is just all midrange & treble with no bass or warmth.

It's not Carvin's fault, but Allan has some wierd tastes in guitars, but I still love him...& Carvin.

I have a Carvin CS6 which I absolutely LOVE, so when I was speaking to the Carvin people about sending this one back, I ordered a Carvin ST300, which should be ready in 6-8 weeks. I got a Holdsworth headstock put on the ST300 in memory of the H2.  :toothy10:

He doesn't really play these. He typically played a Steinberger GL back in the day, and more recently custom DeLap guitars:

Officially he sometimes uses the Carvin guitars on recordings, but I'm not sure how true that is.

I also tried the holdsworth model, and you feel those necks are fat?! really? My crimsons, they are fat. the fatback of warmoth, thats also fat, though my crimsons are thicker. they are 1.2'' thick.  :headbang1:

Apparently he played the Carvin's for years until he wantd to go back to headless & switched to Delap guitars & now custom guitars made by Rick Canton, with whom he's created a new Allan Holdsworth model made out of a material that's never been used before in guitars.

They've been known to cause cancer in laboratory animals?

to make it even worse, the profile is asymmetrical. its a trapezoid-shape on the lower strings and its rounded on the higher strings. very unique, I haven't played a guitar with a neck even remotely simliar to this one.

Love the body shape. Kind of like a stylized rear routed tele. That neck profile just sounds plain weird.  Too bad about the tone, lucky they have that 10 day return policy.

That actually sounds really cool. I always wanted to play one of Rick Toone's trapezoidal neck guitars - I didn't know anyone else had done something similar.

that was indeed the inspiration :) the idea was that if I didn't like the trapezoid side, I could always shave it off, so the neck could have a round profile, like a baseball bat. but I actually like the trapezoid. it makes playing much easier and natural. just angle your hand and thumb; you'll see that the part near your thumb isn't round, its angled, like a trapezoid. but your index finger does look rounded; more so than your thumb. so my neck fits my/your hand perfectly.

That's funny - that neck sounds like something I'd really like, Being far out means the upper frets are easier, right? And even though I have normal hands, I love big necks. I keep my thumb in the back as a matter of habit, and the more meat the better. The standard Carvins I've seen had necks that were too skinny, I sure wish this "Wizard" thing would pass. Ibanez is making some beautiful guitars these days with good electronics - and it's all to waste, with a toothpick neck.
