Care and maintenance of nitro finishes?

My swamp ash Custom T is being professionally finished in black nitro.

What's recommended in terms of cleaning bodies with nitro finishes? I've used Pledge for decades on my other basses, but I don't think any of them are nitro. Is that safe or is there something that's better?

I just use any guitar polish.  Seems to work well and not too expensive.

I would be afraid for use pledge...to much wax.

Keep in mind nitro will cure and cheque ( crack) overtime.  Decades is a more accurate description.  Enjoy

I'm counting on it! The pickguard will be cream Pearloid cellulose, which is also guaranteed to crack over time...

I will post photos when it is done.

Thanks.

Black is notoriously difficult to keep clean-looking. Every little dust particle and fingerprint will show on it, no matter what you do. As great as it looks, a freshly-cleaned finish will look wasted in no time flat. I've got three of them here, and I've found that the best I can do is to put nothing on them. Any kind of wax will just make it take prints faster. That's true of all finishes, but black just shows it up like neon.

Your best bet is to get some microfiber cloths such as these and use that to wipe it down. Put at least one in each guitar case. It actually removes the oils and so forth that make blemishes show up so easily. Then, don't put anything on it. Especially Pledge. Stuff's garbage. It's about 60% water, 39% propellant, .5% wax and .5% mystery crap. Worst stuff in the world to use on anything.  The only reason it's so popular is hateful marketing weenies spend millions to convince idiots to buy it because it sells for a lot and costs almost nothing to make. The can costs more than the ingredients.

Thanks so much for weighing in. I think I started the Pledge habit years ago when I was young and very poor but never really made much of a habit of it. I have two other black basses, but I think they're both poly (not sure about the '76 Precision). I'm pretty used to them looking pretty grungy.

But with this new one on the way the thought crossed my mid and I'm glad I asked.

You tell em Kevin!

Thanks for the tip.

Just discovered that it's also available on Amazon. (Free shipping if you have Prime as opposed to $6 if you don't.)  :hello2:
