Canola oil?

So I just got watched the singer in my band change the strings on his acoustic guitar...and wipe down his rosewood fingerboard and bridge with canola oil. It didn't really strike me as the best idea, but he said he's been doing it for years and his guitar looks fine (and the guy practically sweats acid). What do you guys think?

I don't know?  :icon_scratch:
I have put vegetable oil on my kitchen cutting blocks and after awhile they got all gummy and gunky.
Maybe the acid in his perspiration keeps that from happening?
I don't think I will try it...

Aren't most food grade oils prone to rotting?  This alone would make me stay away from it.

Yes, they oxidize.  First you get a stale paper smell, then they get gummy, then worse.  While they might do the trick short term, I'd use a mineral oil if I were going to.  That is what you put on the cutting board to seal it...

Canola oil is a very tasty and healthy way to cook!  Keep it in the kitchen and away from your guitars

Must have an argument there. Canola oil can make you go blind.  :-\

No, it can't.  There's no Santa Claus either, by the way.

Just thought I'd point out I'm in my psychology class, and not reading the forum in the bathroom.

I don't see any harm in it as long as you wipe off the excess. I rubbed olive oil on a fretboard once. Didn't harm anything.

Martin guitars uses 3-in-1 oil on their fretboards. I tried it. Seemed fine. Same as the olive oil.

Butter is better if you want your fretboard to be smooth as butter. Let me know how this one turns out.
