Because it's not a brilliantly-cut nut, unfortunately. It's the one that came on the neck and without the retainer, there's that "sitar effect" on the top two strings. A new nut would solve it.
It's a two-ply guard. The bottom layer is black acrylic. That has been sprayed on top with a white pearlescent paint. On top of that is the clear acrylic layer - the underside of that has been sprayed with a pale tint to get the cream colour. So short answer, the effect is in the plastic.
This was the guy's second attempt as it was so difficult to get it right without dust creeping in. The dust shows up so easily. It's still not 100% perfect but you have to be really looking to find the imperfections so I'm happy. He told me "never again" so I'm lucky I got it.
I'm not doig a matching Tele because firstly, he won't do another pickguard like that, and secondly, I can't afford to build that many guitars and so it'd feel slightly redundant. I want ALL the colours!
