Can you paint over Danish oil?

Ragamuffin; I'm gonna paint it with spray paint. I thought just I'd try putting something on the bare wood first to try and sorta, I don't know, condition it, seal it, prep it. I'm new at this.

If you are going to spray paint it you would be wasting your time with danish oil.

Here is a link to a guide. With ash you will normally need a grain filler.

As noted above, you'll want to grain fill.  For opaque spray paint, might as well use a compatible primer.  For nitro, use shellac or pigmented lacquer; or use automotive primer.  I use Zinnser B.I.N. under spraypaint.
