Can someone explain the options available?

Hello.

I was looking at getting a 1 7/8" neck. Since I am only a beginner, I was concerned about whether a neck would fit anything I have access to or could reasonably afford to procure. Its not like I can go around unbolting necks to see if a warmoth will fit and buy a used guitar if it does ;)

Anyway, I was leaning towards a more expensive purchase - meaning the whole guitar rather than just the neck. I decided at this stage I should try a few other options before plopping that sort of money down, and really thought some more experience might help me get the "nice" guitar that I want rather than find out later I got something I did not want.

With that in mind I purchased a Rondo strat, 1 11/16" nut with maple/rosewood neck and ash body. Only ran $150, so not too bad. For a cheap guitar, its not too shabby. I won't go into details, but it is nice enough I can play fine, not worry about what happens to it, but probably would not use it to record with.

Moving on, I took a chance and ordered a Big Lou 1 7/8" wide neck. I haven't seen any real reviews on the product, but lots of people asking. I paid $300 for it. It is nice. I do like the wide neck, makes a really noticeable difference to me an my big hands. I do not regret that purchase at all. I am currently working on a video review for it.

However, I cannot shake the feeling that I want a really nice guitar, with what I want and how I want. With that in mind, I know I will be recieving some funds later this year, so I am now looking again at building a warmoth. Having played that much more, and put some time into two different guitars (and those prior) I feel I am more able to determine what I want. None of that is really important at this point.

What is important is I understand my options. For example, a body in the gallery seems to be a good deal compared to choosing something myself that may be nearly identical. But, I find the options a bit confusing. When they show a X-X-H configuration, does that mean you are limited to that? Or can you have them route what you want, like H-S-H for example? Are the ones with a finish already done? Can you modify the color? If you can't, do they route them after they are finished? Is there any concern for damage to the finish then?

Further, if I am building my own, say a soloist, with mabye alder body and some laminate top, when it comes to the binding option, where is that used exactly? On my acoustic it is very obvious where the binding is. How does binding work on different bodies and different compositions of woods?

I apologize this is a bit long. I wanted to lay down some relevant facts that might give an indication of what I am coming from and where I want to go.

Thanks.

Anything in the showcase can be rerouted. Sometimes people even specify to overlap an existing route, such as a humbucker route over an existing tele bridge pickup route.

Warmoth does not strip and refinish anything.

It makes no difference whether or not a body has been finished, if you want to specify additional pickup or bridge routes.

Warmoth does not add binding to showcase bodies.

I'll second everything line6man said. In addition, while I have no first hand knowledge of Rondo's guitars, I can say that a Warmoth makes an exceptional instrument. You won't get one as cheap as the Rondo, but I don't think you would ever regret the extra money spent.

Thanks for the replies.

Regarding binding, I was not necessarily meaning could a showcase body be bound, but in the design your own menus, sometimes binding is an option. As I mention, on my acoustic, I can clearly see the binding, but the acoustic us much more "sharp edged" than my strat models. Does binding apply to strat type body styles? Or, is it an option that may not apply, but is just not disabled? Further, I assume binding on a strat body would be around the outside of the body - would that mean a sharper edge? I just have not seen binding on such a body shape and was wondering if it was a legit option or what exactly.

Regarding Rondo, I am quite sure the warmoth product would be infinitely better. It is also infinitely more expensive ;) At this stage, not knowing what I really want/need, I thought it would be better to sacrifice a little $$ to find out what I do want/need, so that when I want to spend real $$$$, I get something more on reality than dreams, if you know what I mean :)

Hi, Sully.

You can get a bound Strat, either flat-topped or with the top binding conforming to the contour.  It definitely means a sharp (90 degree) edge, rather than the rounded-over edge.

Warmoth also does what they call "Natural Masked Binding", which isn't really binding at all, just the appearance of it via some painting tricks. For example...

That's an attractive solution if you don't want the hard edge of actual binding on a Strat.
