Can a Neck with Floyd Rose shelf accomodate a standard nut?

I picked up a Warmoth neck with a Floyd Rose shelf reserve (no holes).  I don't want to use a floyd rose nut even without the clamps/pads.  My main question is this: can I just put a standard nut on there and be good to go?

i think i'd just put a floyd nut on there without the clamps. seems like it would act a little bit like a zero fret, too. i think putting a standard nut on would work, but seems like it would take a little bit of jury rigging to get it in place and make sure it wouldn't move. a shim behind it might help making sure it doesn't snap off and fall towards the headstock

I may be bending forum etiquette but this is my thread so I guess it is okay to revive it.

Because this neck is a superwide, I have created my own nut.  This question is directed to those of you that have cut and installed their own guitar nuts.  Since the floyd shelf has a bit of a lip, I wonder if it will be adequate to seat the nut (the nut will effectively be glued on the shelf) or should I cut some more of the shelf away (say down to the neck wood) so there is a slot like a normal, non-floyd nut?
