Am I the only one who thinks black strats with white pickguards is the most "overdone" guitar of all time?
They are NOT ugly, but they always go by without me even noticing. Just a simple thing as a black pickguard
makes me take an extra look :)

Which leads me to another question: has somebody actually ordered one like that? Especially if it comes with a maple fretboard, three single-coils and all that very standard stuff.

Even the same guitar just adding a humbucker in the bridge would maybe not be a purchase from me, but I wouldn't just ignore it :)

Agreed about the white PG.  It doesn't look cheap, it just looks stock.  Plus, the standard white pickup covers and controls look great with a non-white PG.

They are pretty common. I used to have one years ago - one of the better Fender Strats I've ever owned/played. Nothing you'd give a second glance to, though. It got transformed into trade bait when I fell in love with a midnight blue burst Levinson Blade. Now, that was Strat. Loved that guitar.

When I saw the thread title, I was going to open the thread and complain. :blob7:
I cannot take white pickguards seriously anymore. Too commonplace and unoriginal. Adding it to a black body, and especially with a Maple or Rosewood fretboard, is just too much.

My strat began life as black w/white pickguard (in 93).
I changed the pickguard to pearloid around 2005

It's got this look now:

No need for a full shot. You've seen 'em before, or in my signature.

Yeah that's really nice! :cool01:

Actually for me it can go as far as only changing from maple to rosewood fretboard would be the absolute minimum to make it look more appealing but then again, that is what you see in toy stores for $50

Pearloid doesn't get a lot of respect around here, and it can be too much (maybe its the penchant for super figured tops on the forum). But I kinda like some of em, especially white or black pearloid against a solid color.

They are a "if a little is good, then a lot is better" thing with me.  A non solid pickguard, like pearloid, tortoise, or shell, looks great with a solid, burst, or transparent finish on an otherwise plain wood.  Throw a fancy pickguard on a highly figured or flamed top and it is too visually stimulating or distracting from the beauty of a good looking top for me.

Lots of different things don't get a lot of respect around here from different folks.  :dontknow:

But I'm one that definitely likes pearloids (or tortoiseshell) in the right circumstances.  :icon_thumright:

It's funny to see that written.  The furniture guitar people feel this forum is a purple dyed PRS #10 topped eye candy centerfold spread.  The dyed top crowd feels it full of coffee tables.

Ten years ago I would have agreed with you, now I'd love to have one although I'm pretty sure if I make a strat with a solid color it would be some kind of blue or red. Important detail: I really prefer the white guard instead of w/b/w. I wish Warmoth would make parchment & mint guards without the black line.

The all black strat thing has been overdone, mainly from Gilmour fans. I really like his black strat with white pickups/knobs but I wouldn't do it just because it's so popular now.

Top routed strats are easy to be changed. New pickguard/knobs/pickups & covers will make a different looking and/or sounding strat for less cost than buying a new guitar.

I've got a balck-on-black strat with white pickups and knobs, but I used a black/cream/black pickguard. Just gives a little extra accent to the shape of the pickguard. It looks really nice.

Playing around a bit with the builder, I was intrigued by the idea of a thinline in  Black/Red Line/Black, or Black/White Line/Black. Be nice in that case if the line were just a bit thicker for effect.
