Black stain on alder

Got this pretty cool 1-piece alder body and I'm thinking I'd like it in a see-through black finish.
Can't find any example of that colour on alder. I'm afraid it's just going to come out as an uneven dark gray.

Any example of such a thing?

I cant see that piece looking too much different then a black transparent finish on swamp ash.

I would say don't stain it. You can mix some black dye with clear and have a transparent black. That would definately yield better results.

Interesting…
However, I don't have any spraying equipment and I don't believe I can get a black dyed clear in a can (and I can't order from Reranch since I'm in Canada).
Is this feasible with a brush-on or wipe-on clear?
(I live in a one-bedroom appartment, I'm already pushing the limit by spraying out of the can in my kitchen…)

Do you have any pictures of such a finish on alder? I'm having problems finding examples of see-through gloss finishes on alder, except the age old Fenderesque sunburst, or ambery clear, or Tru-oil.

Thanks
