I've looked at several pictures of other recessed wilkies and couldn't see under them.  have you tried mocking it in place to see if you can even see the wood below it when the bridge is in place?

Yes, I've got a trem with black finish, and you can definitely see the cavity.

I'm definately not a paint/wood expert, but I wouldn't think you could go wrong since this will be covered (nearly) by the trem, so just about any black paint for wood ought to do the trick.
no matter what you do - make sure that beautiful finish is taped off well first!

You could also use some black stain. I don't really know which would be easier, but its an option. I don' t have any experience, but I would think that if you got a little stain on the clear coat it would just wipe off, but don't take that as a fact.

Since the paint's only purpose is to provide color, you could use absolutely anything that sticks to wood.
Whip out a black sharpie if you want.

Aniline wood dye, aniline fountain pen ink and aniline clothing dye (RIT) are all remarkably similar in composition to aniline food dye - though you may find it hard to locate black food dye, look in the "goth" section of your supermarket. :evil4:
