Black MOP fretboard dots

Has anyone tried the black MOP dots on a black ebony fingerboard?  Is there enough of a contrast to make them visible?

I know there are a number of you who don't like fretboard dots or inlays.  And I agree that they are not necessary.  But, for the most part, I like them.  Kind of like jewelry for your neck.  :laughing7:

I've not seen it, but have wondered about the same thing. Seems like it would be a classy, demure look. I imagine it depends on the Ebony. Some of it is so black and dense that the dots would probably disappear as the wood looks almost like plastic itself. Other pieces, maybe not so much.

I'd say forget the MOP and go with jet black fretboard ebony with black fretboard dots... :toothy12:

Only by accident when I worked there, black dots on an ebony board.
A KWS neck with an ebony board came through, and I mis'spec'd it by not checking the order well enough, too quickly, whichever.  It was preparing to ship and I noticed it & brought it up.  The customer was not pleased, and it ended up in the showcase with a re-build thereafter.

It blended in pretty well, but was redundantly pointless.

I had to eat a pretty good sized slice of humble pie that day.

If subtlety is your bag, go for it.  I think it would be cool - one of those things you don't notice at first.

TFS, I love your candor, brother.

Well, I've had nearly 6 years since my departure from the shop to decompress from the event.  It was a lesson that the pressure and pace of high production does not warrant the ignorance of detail.

Its all good, Tony.  On a personal build I accidentally ordered black binding on a mahogany neck with a jet black ebony board.  :icon_biggrin:

Just to be sure, though, were you talking about black dots, like DangerousR6 was?  I was asking about the Black Mother of Pearl dots.

Cagey, that is pretty much what I thought it would look like:  classy and demure.  :icon_thumright:

The way I read it, it was ebony with black dots, not MOP...
:dontknow:

Well, I guess I'd better double up on my "English as a foreign language" tapes...  :laughing7:

Never seen it done, but if you want to do it go for it.
I however would just go with out and put abalone side markers like my last build, Go Naked!

Anyway, I'd say go for it. Probably at certain angles dots would be invisible. But I think for them to really show, they'd have to be on a jet black board. Could be interesting... :dontknow:

I agree.  I have a maple neck being built with black MOP dots.  I'll see what the dots look like in person, first.

Thanks for the input, everyone.  :icon_thumright:
