Planning a future build as cash is tight to complete the current builds.
Neck back and body will be black korina.
I was fortunate in that someone offered so send me some black korina cuts that I can test on.

The plan restrictions:
I finish it myself, indoor job, not humidity of heat sensitive (I live in FL), no sprayer available.
Is my order OK, (leaving out the sanding between steps only from the listing below for clarity sake) and where these is A or B, pick one.

1. Prep the wood

2. Seal it: choices of A: thinned Tru-Oil or B; thinned Shellac

3. Grain fill (this is where I will test different fills. Clear with ZPoxy, Walnut with Timbermate, Black with Timbermate. Not sure if I want to try the Tru-Oil slurry method)

4. Seal the filler using A or B from step 2

5. Build a film layer using A or B from step 2

Looking to achieve gloss finish on body and satin on neck back.

Thoughts

BK is both gorgeous and pairs well with easy at home finishes. Enough so that I find it hard to consider much else.

I've used walnut Timbermate and Tru oil on my ash body. Rubbing on the Tru oil can move the Timbemate a bit - I rubbed fairly lightly so I minimised rubbing dye colour around and am happy to have physical grain texture showing in the body finish.

I mainly wanted the walnut to accent the grain visually and it does that. It was applied directly to the sanded wood. It's not complete yet but I'm happy with progress other than the oil drying slow :)

I'm just finishing up an Ibanez RG black limba build.  Using Z-Poxy as both grain filler and final finish.  Probably the easiest finish I've ever done.  I still prefer lacquer though, feels less plastic-like...but, that's just me

I love Korina. I've done 2 black korina bodies. Both straight Tru-oil, both came out great.

That's hot.  :eek:ccasion14: Perle guitars body?

I miss my old S540LTD, but have a RG652FX coming in today.

DirtySteve, so you used the TO slurry method to pore fill?

I just applied straight tru-oil and worked each coat until you can feel it starting to thicken up, then wipe off the excess wiping with the grain. #0000 steel wool in between coats. I wanted to feel the texture of the grain so I didn't worry about trying to fill the grain, but it I had wanted a smoother finish I would have started wet sanding the coats on after about the second sealer coat.

They still turned out pretty smooth, I can feel some texture but not much. And I don't have many coats, probably 6 or 7, I didn't want a thick finish.

@dirtysteve what kind of necks on those beautiful bk bodies?

The P-90 one has a wenge neck with a ziricote fret board, I got creative, lol! The regular Tele has a roasted maple with dark rosewood fb. Both short scale conversion necks with compound radius.
