Black fingerboard stain on roasted maple

Does this work on ROASTED maple?

Since that's an india ink it *MIGHT* work. Ebonizing that relies on tannins in the wood do NOT work on maple. But also since maple is not very porous, and it's a fingerboard - I'd not really expect it to wear very well even if you got a good black to begin with. But I've never tried it.
