Big ( 70's) Strat Headstocks for Better tone?

All things being equal, I say if you can hear a difference, it's because you've convinced yourself you hear a difference.  Since you cannot truly A/B a neck with different headstock sizes it's really kinda impossible to objectively evaluate unless you start with a big headstock and then lop off the 1.4 cubic inches of wood (or whatever it is) to get to the smaller shape.  There's just not that much mass.

I did just that one time. Couldn't tell a difference in sound but it looked more to my liking.

s steinburger guitar with no headstock can have tone for days and sustain for weeks.  I say it doesn't matter.

I agree with going with what you think looks best. When you consider that there are teles that sound like they were handed down from heaven and sound nothing less than profound in the right hands I don't think you can read much into having the MacMansion of headstocks by contrast.

If the neck is not sufficiently rigid, the amount of mass absolutely affects the frequency of resonant vibrations of the neck like a tuning fork. That's why the Fat Finger devices mentioned earlier can affect the dead spots on a bass.

But whether the headstock style on a guitar makes an audible difference is questionable.

And regardless, any difference would be most pronounced with less rigid, less stable necks that many of us deliberately avoid by buying from W.
