Aside from the fact that they tune just fine and stay in tune as well, I go Schaller for lockers cuz the lock knob is big and knurled, the whole unit is one color (silver, gold or black) and the styling isn't ultra-modern ghey.

I have 3 kinds - Schaller, PW, and Grover mini locking Rotomatics.

I like the Grovers the best. They're the kind that lock themselves as you start turning the peg. I find them to be the easiest to use and they work fine - no tuning issues with them at all.

The Schallers are good but it is possible to tighten the thumbscrew crooked. Not a big deal but it can be slightly annoying. Also the knurled knob hurts my tender fingers. :toothy10:

PW's are good, but I've heard that the cutting thing can screw up after a while. Also the thumbscrew can fall out if you loosen it too far. This can be slightly annoying but no big deal. Also, if you don't tighten them as hard as you can on the plain strings, there is a chance the string can pop out - and then you can never get it back in because the extra length is chopped off. Not a major problem, but it did happen to me once. I'm just extra careful to make sure it's good and tight.

All are good, but I like using the Grovers the best since I don't have to tighten anything down. Just pull the string through and start turning.

PW - works well but are heavy and look a bit sci-fi.
Schaller - works well, not much to say.
Gotoh - makes a ton of different locking tuners, I have one set which I like a lot. Lightweight, looks like normal tuners (autolocking)
Grover - Never had a bad Grover but some people are down on them from what I hear. My acoustic has Grover open-back tuners and they work perfectly.
Lots of good tuners out there these days, I don't think it's a big issue.

Sperzel anyone? Going to put them on a guitar for a friend, probably...

I'm surprised about Grover, can't remember on somebody recommending them before...

hey don't listen to me - I don't know anything :laughing7:

I have had Sperzel and Schaller. I would never buy the Sperzels. The knob on the back is really thin and sharp. It hurt like crazy to crank them down tight enough. (Maybe the knobs were thinner than their standard model, I don't know. They were on my old Parker Fly and I think they were custom lightened for Parker.) The Schallers have a very comfortable knob with smoother action, but they are more than twice as heavy as the Sperzels were.

I've used the Sperzels and the Gotoh kluson-style locking type.

Liked the sperzels a lot, very solid feeling, never had a slippage problem. Look and feel well made. Gotoh kluson lockers work okay, but feel much cheaper. I haven't had an issue with these either, but I don't necessarily trust them as I do the Sperzels. Gotoh's look totally vintage though, if that matters to you.

I don't have much experience with locking tuners, but I decided to get the Grover Roto-Grip locking ones for my upcoming Warmoth LP because they had the highest gear ratio of all the locking tuners.  I'll let you know what I think of them.

I recently setup a nice 08 Fender American Deluxe with the new F-stamped knobs on the Schallers.  The knobs are much less gnarly and they're 18:1.

I still have to say that the Planet Waves are my favorite so far.

I just bought a set of the new Gotoh 510 mini self lock tuners. I had to order them from Stewmac cause Warmoth doesn't carry them. They look really cool and I think they will work ok. I'll be putting them into my first Warmoth build. It's a swamp ash Jazzmaster. I can report back once I'm done if anyone is still interested.

To roboboss: Of course we are interested!! Looking forward to hear about how the 510's are working. Have fun with your new guitar! Thanks

I put inn sperzels in my old strat. The knob hurts like hell, and they didn't work very well.
I have the schaller on my MusicMan SM, and they are firm and smooth, and does not hurt!

I voted schaller
