Behind the nut clamp

I am about to get a very cheap guitar (a Rockson soloist... A jackson knockoff) and wonder if I could set a floyd on the body and then just put one of these behind the nut?

It's maybe the absolutely best construction in the world but I know that others have used it with good result.

Should work fine.  That is the old Kahler style.  I never had any issues on a Gibson Explorer with a Kahler I had back in the 80s

Some people don't like it, but when I come and think about it, I would probably have to do more with the actual trem unit than the clamp. Like a bad pot metal bridge or something...

Regular Strat trems can work pretty good, so I don't see how this would be any worse, there's no much room for movement between the regular nut and the clamp.

You can also use a graph-tech nut.  That helps.  If you find it going out of tune, add the lock.
Bottom line it is a sting lock, not high tech or stress.

Well, I'll put on a (non-recessed) Gotoh Floyd on the body that's why I really need something looking on the other side too

Locking tuners are pretty effective if used properly in conjunction with a well-formed nut. And by "used properly" I mean don't put 3 or 4 wraps of string on them. Should end up with about a half-wrap. Adding a locking nut would seem to be a "belt and suspenders" solution at that point, but it's really a waste of time that just makes dealing with instrument maintenance a pain in the shorts without providing any benefit.

What's the worst thing that could happen? I could be wrong, and you add the locking device later. But, I'm not wrong.

Well, now I canceled my ideas of buying that cheap guitar.
But I will keep this in mind until I get some new ideas... Probably should only look for a cheap guitar body and then put a good neck on it instead.

The neck and pickups are the thing. You can get away with murder on the body, but if you don't have a good neck and pickups, the thing is scrap.

All I'm sayin' is, every time I look at the title "behind the nut clamp" I get a really uncomfortable feeling that I'm about to see some extremely NSFW photo of a dude with ass-less chaps and some exotic hardware attached to his humdinger.

This is what the Internet has done to me.

*sigh*
