Long story short....
I built a Gecko about five-six tears ago with an EMG 40 pickup.....
I wanna do a Deluxe 5 J at some point with two P/U routs, and am
thinking I oughta do EMG 40 routs because of the enormous amount of pickups available
for that rout.....
I'm leaning toward Bartolini 72M45C's but just wondered if anyone
had any suggestions..... :tard:

I have a bass with a Nordstrand pickup in it.  I am always surprised with how many different sounds I can get out of it with the three way (series, single, parallel) switch.  They make a line of soapbars, which are advertised to fit the EMG routes.  I would send Best Bass Gear an email if you are interested.  Best Bass Gear treated me extremely well and called a couple of weeks later to be sure that everything worked out.  In my case there was an odd issue that was not clear until the owner of the pick up company was spoken with.  But Best Bass Gear figured it out for me, and I am a happy camper.  The Nordstrand pickup sounds really good to me, and considering that my pals ask to borrow it a lot, I guess it sounds good to my friends as well.

In my opinion, the Bartolini "classic bass" pickups (model M45CBC) will sound better than their "deep tone" pickups (i.e. XXM45C, 72M45C).  They have a better midrange and more warmoth and resonance.

Other options include the following:

Any of the "40" series EMG soapbar-shaped pickups (obviously)
Q-Tuner "BL5" pickups
Villex pickups (made to order, many sizes available)
SGD "ND3" humbuckers or "S4" sidewinders (made to order, etc.)
Delano SBC 5 pickups are just about the same size, but a few millimeters smaller (38mm vs 36mm) on the short side

What was it?

The dummy coil (3 coil) music man pickups are direct replacements for musicman basses with those pickups only.  There is some funky wiring and no diagrams to decipher the pickup or how to pull off the proper wiring.  I am sure if someone wanted to they could eventually figure it out, but the pickups were never intended for anything else but that one system.  The quad coil Nordstrand musicman pickup can do everything the triple coil can, it is much easier to do the wiring with the quad coil, the single coil split is still humbucking, and it is ten bucks cheaper.  Brian at Best Bass Gear asked Carey Nordstrand about this at NAMM two years ago for me, and Carey laughed and said pretty much what I described above.  Since then, if I want to buy something for my bass-es, and Best Bass Gear carries the product, I always buy it from them.
