basic assembly question

I'm about to drill the holes for a tele control plate....do you guys have any tips or tricks to ensure the plate gets mounted straight?...It's hard to tell where I'm at to even mark the holes because the plate covers up the opening and I can't see if I'm dead center of the cutout and perfectly straight up and down..

Onto a piece of clear plastic .... like the box sperzel tuners come in, or alike.

Mark around the control plate onto that and mark your screw holes.
Then put that onto the body.
