I have an ash 72 thinline body, and I read somewhere that ash has an open grain. I have never finished a guitar before, and was wondering if I had to use a grain filler. If so, could I get some recommendations on what to use? Thanks.

Yes you will want filler. There are several available but I like this;

You'll want this one. #0220-A

If this is your 1st, and we always remember our 1st, you'll want to read this;

Take your time, enjoy the effort and you will enjoy the result.

YES>

Also...the finish you are doing depends on what type of fill you use.  The Stew Mac stuff can add a color of your choice to the grain.

I have used this in the past.  Plus I love the smell of it.... :icon_thumright:

there are various methods depending on the finish.  Some seal then fill.  Others fill then seal.

What is you desired end result??
