So my old Warmoth 5-string bass came with this Wilkinson bridge:

...which, ever since that bass got converted to an 8-string, has been going unused.

I'm now in the planning stages of a new Warmoth 5-string build, and was thinking about reusing this bridge. However, two things are giving me pause:

- I was never 100% satisfied with the sound of that bass in its original configuration, and much of that seemed to be due to mechanical issues (i.e., unremarkable acoustic resonance on the low string).
- the folks over on the TalkBass.com forum seem to unanimously believe that this bridge is a POS.

Anyone have anything good or bad to say about this bridge? Should I just take whatever I can get on eBay for it and buy a new Hipshot, or are these Wilkinson bridges adequate for a pro grade instrument?

(yeah, I know it's a 4-year-old post...I put this project on hold, and am just now getting it back on the radar.)

I'd use it if it was mine to decide, but everything I know about basses you could engrave on the head of a pin with a blunt rock. It's a pretty simple-looking design, which is usually a Good Thing. If you had response problems in the past, it's more likely your neck was the culprit on the unit you took that off of.
