CD buying rampages?

Over the past week I have purchased 24 cds, 6 arrived in one day. (Secretly I am hoping that the rest of them arrive on the same day. It would be cool to see 18 seperate packages come through my letterbox  :laughing7: )

NO but I go on downloading rampages on mediafire because I'm not giving those record company dicks my money.

That's all fine and dandy, but the sound quality of downloaded music blows compared to the original source.  Way too compressed and icky.

That's why the only music I will pay for is vinyl. CD compared to Mp3 it's all a bit crap anyway so who cares?

I do, I regularly go buy used cd's on amazon for 2-3$. Too bad Amazon won't combine shipping on third party stuff even from the same vendor - and they appear to ship them individually too. Go figure.

Anyone got something better? I do like to have polycarbonate originals though.

Remember a few months back when I was in a Zappa phase and bought eleven albums one day and nine more another day? :blob7:
(Actually, I got another Zappa album on Ebay this morning, too. Just one though.)

I actually prefer it when my CDs come on separate days. It gives me something to look forward to, coming in the mail, and it gives me more time to listen to each one and not rush the listening experience.

this has been my schtick for years. tho lately i find less and less avialalbe funds for buying CDs. i spend more money on shows than CDs nowadays

a 320 kbps MP3 sounds really good. and I hear FLAC files that sound better than many CD's I've heard.

I've never heard Vinyl sound anything other than muddied.

If someone can tell me more about how it can NOT suck. I'd be glad.

To my ears there's a bit of a trade off with vinyl and cds. I love the warmth of vinyl and the way all the edges are rounded, but the clarity just isn't there to my ears. Cd's and mp3's don't have the warmth but they have the clarity. But I'm not a sound nazi audiofile, so I take the cheaper route of cds/mp3s and enjoy music for the sake of music.

I really don't understand you vinyl-only guys. Do you do all of your music listening on your home stereo? No CDs in the car? No iPod at the gym? :dontknow:

+3! Or whatever we're up to here... Vinyl is great, but the convenience of CDs is just too much. When I'm at my dad's house it's a lot of fun to pick through his album collection and listen to the vinyl (mostly his Miami Vice soundtrack), but I'll take my not-quite-100%-but damn-close CDs, thank you very much. I can play them in my car, pop them into my computer and have them on my iPod, or whatever. Play anything through a nice sound system that's been EQ'ed decently and they'll all sound good to me!

I like vinyl and cds.  I need a new record player though, preferably one that I can easily record from onto my computer so that I can still listen to my songs when the record gets scratched up eventually.  When I have more space for my record collection, I'm gonna get all my favorite blues and jazz on vinyl.  I already have a lot of the classic rock I'm into.

I grew up on vinyl and ... it sucked. I still don't really miss the rice krispy boys (snap, crackle and pop, plus their cousin rumble.)  It reminds of the old cartoon gag.

Grandpa? Did you live in the 'good ole' days'? Yes, but back then we called them 'These trying times'.

with my collection having gone way past the 1000 mark in CDs, and being around 400 in Vinyl I have to say I no longer bulk buy
I thought at one time that I would never say I have Music I no longer listen to, but I do now, there are recordings I have not had out in years
I do have to admit I have probably the best collection of Hair Metal anywhere, my Jazz collection and Blues collections are enviable and my Vinyl is strongly oriented to 70s and 80s C&W
but........ I usually think twice now before I buy as I have many a disc only listened too once

A mortgage and the reality of life kinda puts a dent into any urges to dump $$ into a stack of CDs .........

downloaded music can be better than cd's provided a. it is not recoreded from a cd but from a source better than a cd like sacd, audio dvd, or a digital master copy of some kind, maybe from vinal provided everything from the needle to the drive motor to the amplification to the dac are all high quality and in proper working order b. it is not recorded with speaker and mic, or throught other analog means where it is rare to have hifi equipment these days. and c. that it is recorded in a lossless codec or in a standard codec but at a higher sample rate and bit rate than cd's.

mp3's are ok at 320kbps

so if you want to try mediafire or you use bit torrents look for mp3 320kbps or flac or 24bit @96khz but be careful if you dont want to be sued into bankruptcy not that it is a high risk but it happens enough to make it into the news occasionally.

so if you want a good repeatable and not prone to wear listening experience get a good hifi dac/preamp there may be good internal cards but it seems all the hifi guys like dedicated external usb versions prolly for emi insulation but im sure if you find an internal card with a comparable dac it will be fine, get a hifi power amp with good sheilded cables (short cables are better for less capacitance, cat-5 is also good if you want to make your own interconnects with low capacitance though george l's cable with brass rca style ends would logically be a great choice for hifi the cable is cheap maybe comparable to cat-5 as long as you buy bulk cable without the special goerge l's ends) and get some quality speakers. vinyl is great for occasional listening but it don't last forever.
