Hello all,

New member here from the UK. I discovered Warmoth after making my old 2002 MIM Strat into a project. Sadly, I had already completed that project before finding Warmoth, but may still use them to get a new neck.

Now, the real focus of this thread is I have decided to get a full Warmoth build. I still have some number crunching to do as duty fees etc will need to be taken into account. Please offer any advice on what I am proposing, I am a life long acoustic guitarist and have only recently found an interest in electric guitars again. I have a fairly decent knowledge of materials for acoustics, but have no real idea about the elecronics, wiring etc (hence why this will be a project).

So here is what I am looking at:

BODY:

Scale: 25-1/2 in.
Carved Top: Yes
Chambered: Yes
Orientation: Right handed
Core Wood: Black Korina
Front Laminate: Black Korina
Control Cavity: Rear Rout
Pickup Rout: Humbucker (Neck) - None (Middle) - Humbucker (Brdg)

Bridge Type: Hardtail
Bridge Rout: Schaller 456,Angled Pocket

Neck Pocket: Strat® Shape
Mounting Holes: Standard 4 Bolt
Contours: Contoured Heel & Tummy Cut
Binding Top: Natural Masked Binding
Stud Install: Use inserts from bridge on order
Top Finish: Tobacco Burst
Back Finish: Tobacco Burst

NECK:
Style: Warmoth-2
Construction: Warmoth Pro Angled
Scale: 25-1/2 in.
Neck Wood: Shaft Wood: Koa
Fingerboard Wood: Ziricote (Unique Choice Fingerboard: FB1626)
Orientation: Right Handed
Nut Width: 1-11/16"
Back Shape: 59 roundback
Radius: 10-16" compound
Number of Frets: 22
Fret Size: 6150
Tuner Ream: Gotoh/Grover (13/32", 11/32")
Inlays: Mother Of Pearl Dots
Side Dots: Mother Of Pearl Side Dots
Pre-Cut Installed String Nut: GraphTech White TUSQ
Mounting Holes: Standard 4 Bolt
Finish: Clear Satin Nitro

The neck, whilst I think would look great I have concerns about. More because I don't think I have ever seen a Koa neck before and don't know how it responds. Also, I have noticed a lot of guitars have no "Warmoth" logo on the headstock, but some do, is this something you specify when ordering? (I don't want it). Also, I went for a satin nitro for the finish on the neck as I like a smoother neck. I went for the tobacco burst on the body. I originally wanted to go for the washed blue dye, but I like subtle styling and I must say, I really liked the demo picture of the tobacco on black Korina on the Warmoth website.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum

The Warmoth logos are decals that you purchase separately - the headstock will be blank when you get the neck.

Also, I like to look at the Gallery when planning a build - you can see similar finished guitars for an idea of what yours might look like, or get inspired to do something a little different.

I don't own any koa necks (yet) but the Neck Woods section has descriptions of the different species.

Warmoth does not put any logo on the headstocks, and are expressly prohibited from doing so.  You should get a sticker (that most people say is unsuitable for using as a headstock decal (I put it on my strat)) or purchase a metal logo with your order to slap on it.
The only thing about Koa that I know is that it look gorgeous and requires a finish.  You may wish to check out the other 'exotic' neck woods that do not need a finish, if you're looking to save some money.  Wood types including but not limited to: wenge, rosewood, canary, bocote, purpleheart.  Some wood types aren't available with tiltback headstocks though.

Thanks for the replies guys. I opted for a satin nitro finish on the neck. All my acoustics have mahogany necks and as much as I like them, they look a little boring to me. I want this guitar to look classy yet stand out from the crowd.
