so - You like your stereo? You like the sound of your tube amp? You like that we live in a free world?
Then you should thank Alan Blumlein. Among other things, Alan invented stereo microphone techniques (which are still called 'Blumlein pairs'), stereo record cutters, stereo phono pickups, and created the first films with stereo sound. He also invented the long tail pair, a phase splitting arrangement used in 90% of push-pull guitar amps; everything from the Deluxe Reverb to the AC30. He also invented H2S radar, which was used by the Allies during the second world war to accurately pinpoint bomb targets during night raids and to locate submarines in the atlantic.
A lover of music, he had 128 patents to his name when he was killed in 1942 during an H2S radar trial when the Halifax Bomber he and his team were testing in developed an engine fire and crashed. He was 38.
He's being awarded a Technical Grammy this year. About time.
