I was in Sam Ash today looking for a hard case for Barn Door Tele today, did not find anything that suited the axe but I went and decided to play around with some small amps. I really do have this thing for amps I have to admit and I am always searching for the perfect practice amp. Well anyway I was playing around with this thing and thinking 500 plus tax was just a bit high for my taste when my Droid statred going off telling me I had email, I open it up and there is a Email from GC stating they had 15% off all items over 299 clams, that is 75 bucks. I was showing my wife the discount and the salesman told me If I would buy it from Sam Ash he would throw in a 10 dollar gift certificate. Now the thing was 415 Washingtons and that was right up my alley.
Sold, we went to the counter and preceded to pay, when the manager mentioned he would give 10 dollars for a stack 100 dollar bills. Never say something like that in front of My wife, we had picked up some change to bring to her sister's store on the way home from shopping and she plopped 100 one dollar bills down and asked for the 110 dollars he was muttering about. So for 405 greenbacks I ended up with the amp, but had to hit the bank again for her sister.
This thing sounds great, only 15 watts but that is 15 watts of tube power and that is always louder than solid state. Plus it has 2 tubes in the preamp, I had been looking at some other brands earlier and they only had 2.
Anyway, I was glad, wife loved the discounts, had enough money left over to bring her out to lunch at Red Lobster.
Good day in my neck of the woods.

I've been looking for a small tube amp like that, but for the sake of my marriage I have to be able to play through headphones now and then so it's never happened. Anyone know of any such invention that can allow me to simulatenously play and be married to a fine woman? Congarts on the buy J  :party07:

^^yes, Amplitube works wonders for that.  or some other quality amp modeling software.

I'm suspicious of claims that digital stuff can reproduce real sounds. I've found a couple of small tube amps with headphone jacks (although they're not common).

i've posted vids before.  it's quite amazing what modern technology can do.

this being said, i still want a real amp.

I'm with you. I've been considering a Marshall class 5, or one of these http://www.traynoramps.com/products.asp?id=251&cat=63&type=3

Expense though, especially to aust.

a few years back I bought a set of earphones you plugged into the guitar, now it seems Vox has a system that sounds like a real amp, infact they have different amps you can get.
I play through headphones after the wife goes to bed, but during the day I run through my Vox
This amp is for playing out actually, not at gigs but at workshops and jam nights
I was using a Bass amp I had owned for years but it was beginning to show it's age. both in looks and the way it preformed, This thing will be taken out and used about once a week I guess, I was actually looking at the next step up amp the hot rod deluxe, but the price was not there. I looked at the G-dec 30 which is a lot cheaper but it is Solid State, however it is incredible what that thing does. I may get one in a few years anyway, I mean being able to dial in plate reverb, drum machine and all, in a practice style amp, it is a great system.
But basially I am a tube head. I need to hear those puppies burning. You just can not emulate true tube distortion.

Those emulators can really only do 2 things as good as t00b amps can:

1)  Clean tone

2)  Massive, super-compressed, angry buzzy-bees distortion

But anything in between (from a little "dirt" to say 80's distortion levels) and they fail miserably.

Reason why?  Clipping dynamics.

There isn't any clipping going on with a clean tone, and the No. 2 example (above) has no dynamics
because the guitar signal is squashed with way too much compression... e.g. you can sneeze
on your guitar and get an E power chord there's so much gain/dist/comp.

Run this into your stereo system and use head phones:
This seems amazingly flexible in the in between ranges ... i.e. just a little crunch etc.

Jim, you ever looked at this?  It's more or less the same thing but has 3 preamp tubes, comes with a cover, is $399 and made in the USA.

I was going to get that amp, Just the blues Jr has so much more aftermarket support for it, Yes I know it is USA and I do feel bad the Bjr is China made. But bottom line is when you get a little amp such as this you know you are going have it modded, and the mods are already figured out for the Bjr
I do think my next big amp isgoing to be the BELAIRE however, I actually am thinking of moving the Vox into the "HALL OF RETIRED AMPS" or spare bedroom as my wife calls it. It will sit with my Twin,my Vox 15, and my Carvin 8 channel PA gathering dust but to treasured to get rid of.

the Bjr is a 3 tube preamp with 2 EL84s, It has more of that blackface tone also which by the way is sounding great with Barn Door plugged in..

You lucky bloody Americans. I was checking out this one: http://www.betterguitar.com/equipment/amplifiers/traynor/ycv20review.html

In the US costs about 700, in Australia? $1400. We get so screwed here.

But you also have a bazillion local guys who make amps.  That's pretty cool.

I've been impressed enough with the SansAmp and clones that I've played that I've seriously thought about getting one of these:

Problem is I'm looking for one that I can actually play while married. So ti needs a headphone out, and those aren't all that common.

I have often thought of going this way
but around the house I use headphones pluged into a (forgive me) dean markly board stolen from a plastic battery operated amp.  OK OK it was free and I can play into early morning hours without complaints.
But I look at those Allen amps, listen to the clips, watch them on You tube and get the monkey on my back Jones going.
I think about getting a Chihuahua with reverb and making it a stereo output and run 2 6 inch speakers. I would  put that under my music stand and rock out when practicing, so very cool.
Plus I want to look at his modifications he did to make that RAW circuit he has. Just to cool, I could add that to any amp I own.

BUT................ Man are his prices high. there are a few 2 to 5 watt amps for so much less that are acceptable for Apartment levels Cletus

Man, if you are looking for something with the apartment sound levels, check this out:

A Vox Lil' Night Train tube amp [2 watts] with Celestion speaker cab for $329.99.  I just stumbled on this and am thinking about getting one just to have around.
Plus is has a headphone jack which is quite rare for a tube amp.  At that price, how can you go wrong???

This guy has some pretty thorough mods for the Vintage 16.  Granted, I don't know enough about tube amps to even understand what I'm reading, he sounds like he knows what he's doing.  My Ed Roman radar didn't go off.
