So, just as a public service announcement: If anyone is planning to build a Warmoth Firebird, with the raised center laminate option, GIBSON STYLE KNOBS WILL NOT FIT. I found this out the hard way.
I always wondered about the knob hole placement on the Warmoth firebirds. But I *assumed* that they wouldn't route the holes too close.
Well, I was wrong. With the standard hole locations, the only knobs that will work are 7/8" diameter metal dome knobs. The standard 1" diameter plastic knobs don't clear the ridge.
Despite a bunch of folks telling me to return it, I decided to just fix it myself.
I lowered the holes by 1/8".
Then I plugged the upper portion with half-moon shaped wood plugs.
Once the potentiometer is installed, the washer covers up the plug completely anyway,
And now, the knob will clear the raised center laminate ridge just fine.
It's not an "end of the world" type issue here, and it was a relatively easy (but time consuming) fix. But I just wish that Warmoth did some better testing before they settled on the hole placement. Or, at the very least, give a warning on the website that the holes will only accept 7/8" diameter metal dome knobs.
