A little help on wiring.

Hey folks.

Putting together my first tele, and i think it will be great.

I usually don't have any problems with wiring, but i can get this fricker fired up. The jack is my problem.

I can't seem to get the jack-input to work. It's my first time using a deep panel jack from switchcraft.

First of all - It's apparantly a stereo-jack. I didnt even realise that untill just before when i opened the bag with smaller parts.

There is three legs. The big one (ground) and two others middle size and small. I tried different combinations, and when i have the jack halfway into the plug in the one i thought was the right one, I can actually get response from the pickups.

Volume and tonecontrol works at that point too, so the soldering should be fine.

It's the contact from jack to the rest, thats the issue.

Do i need a monojack, or can i do something else about it?

Hope you can help me out here.

I've searched around a bit and found several treads. Couldn't find an answer tho...

On a stereo jack, the ring is shorted to ground anyway when you plug a mono plug into it. Hot goes to tip and sleeve is the ground.

Do you have a multimeter to test with? Usually the best way is to just plug a (known to be working) cord in and test continuity from each lug to to other end of the cord.

EDIT: just reread and saw that you said it works if plugged halfway in - that suggests you have hot going to ring (i.e. the "middle" contact) instead of tip.

Yep - you have your 'hot' output going to the ring on the jack.  Disconnect it from there and wire it to the other terminal instead.  Don't short the two terminals together, for reasons that drewfx outlined.

That should fix it.

Great. Thanks. Works just fine now.

The 4th position of the 4-way switch doesnt activate the bridge-pickup tho. Rest works just fine. Gonna adjust it a bit and turn back to the wiring after dinner. With a fresh perspective!

The three ordinary positions work just fine. So now for adjusting it before taking it for "a drive".

Thanks for the fast reply.
