65 Mustang back to life....(more pics!)

Vic sent me his 65 Mustang.

Wooooh a basket case almost.

Needs a refret, so I'm doing that.  The metal is uniformly pitted.  The neck cleaned up ok on the finsih, a little wear, nothing big.  So, it'll get a new nut, new frets, a quick overspray of the dulled headstock, and a not so good buff out... to keep the aging looking right.

The body... is heavilly worn, once stripped, and has white brushed on latex house paint over clear poly.  It all has to be stripped down.  Then wood filled, then dyed a sort of musty brownish amber, then hit with some shell pink, then clear.... then leveled, buffed, and allowed final drying... then hit with burlap, steel wool, keys, knives, old Harley parts, etc etc.. .to relic it a bit.  I'll have to match the wear to the neck's wear.

Of note - the original frets are much smaller then regular Fender frets.  They're more like mandolin frets.  About .070 wide and .038 tall, very narrow, also, they have VERY short tangs, about .045.   The short tang thing, I suspect, is because Fender was using thick veneer for the fretboard, about .062 thick or so (by estimation, not measured).

So... we'll get some pics of this.  Shell pink, maybe a little amber on it in places.  The white shell guard is very yellow now.

Also missing trem springs, and pickup cover (just one) if anyone knows a source.

OH MAN...this sounds so awesome.  shell pink looks so badass on all the fender offsets imho, especially once it has naturally/artificially yellowed.  I'm excited for pics.  :icon_thumright:

I thought this was gonna be a ford mustang thread

ditto - I was all set to hear about a car

What's that they say about "without pics it never happened?"

I miss my Mustang, wish I hadn't sold it now...

... back to the story in progress....

Apologies for no pictures yet.  There will be before and after, and during... just that the camera is in residence elsewhere till Friday or so.

At this point, all the frets are off, with almost no tearout or chipping.  When the frets behaved, I used the "slide 'em out sideways" method, as opposed to the pull 'em out method.  There are just a few small fretboard repairs, nothing serious.  I think I can find some rosewood to make into dust so I can make some mortar with it to fill in where needed.  The fretboard divots... not so bad.  There, but not ungainly.  Certainly not as offensive as, say, Madeleine Albright or Janet Reno in a thong bikini.

My challenge is going to be making the new finish on the body look aged and old, worn and at least semi matching the neck.  But, on the other hand, it cant look no worse... it done up poorly, in house paint, brushed on in barely one coat.

Just realized that this is a 22-1/2 inch scale guitar, not 24 inches.  Hmmm.  Narrow 1-1/2 nut too.

i thought the guitar was a 'Leo's parts drawer' throw together from the '70's using some '60's parts.

Checked the scale... 22-1/2, with 11-1/4 from nut to 12 and 11-3/8 from 12 to bridge center - which I think is about right.

Neck is 1.85 wide at heel, while the neck pocket is 2.10 wide at the corresponding area.  So this not standard for either size.....

That being the case, I'm going to have to glass bed the neck into the body using gun stock bedding epoxy.  Oh joy of joys. <smiles>

How's the bridge look? Would a modified 'tang bridge from Warmoth help, you think?

Pros/cons?

No need for the modified bridge - as your current bridge matches the fretboard radius.

And here's pics... no particular order

Just showing where we're at.  Fretboard pullouts not too bad... one dingus... I think it will be easily repairable with the sawdust/superglue method. If anyone can make out that neck stamp... dont be shy in sharing what it says.

from what I see, those pots are older than the neck.......

That tail piece cleaned up nice!~

Nov 70.... with the thin veneer rosewood?  I thought they stopped that in 64/65ish?
