I had done this before and replaced the stock 6V6s..........until today. I reinstalled a pair of NOS 5881s in my Fender Super Champ X2 and it sounds incredible. Lots more clean Blackface headroom.

Interesting. The 5881 is actually a 6L6, and the Super Champ is designed for 6V6. Which means, you could have some issues.

I went searching for some references to this, and found an other-forum entry from yesterday by somebody called "JeffBlue" who has tried this  :)

Here's a different other-forum thread, where a fella wanted to put in a hotrod deluxe transformer, and change tubes to 6l6's (along with the required resistors and caps). http://www.archive.agileguitarforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=31783. About halfway down, this was posted...
I doubt the PT would be happy with 6L6s. The filaments on a 6v6 are .45 amps. the filaments on a 6l6 are .9amps. You're doubling that. The 6L6 is also going to use on average twice the current on the B+ line. The diodes/filter caps/etc. might not be up to spec for that much current. I wouldn't do this. It's more work than I think you realize. Just because 6L6s CAN fit, doesn't mean they WILL. Plus, remember that the preamp electronics were tuned to work with 6v6 tubes. Also, heat dissapation might become an issue

But I think you mentioned that you hadn't had any heat issues. But at the very least, if I were to run 6L6s, I might want to keep the bias down a bit. And maybe try not to drive them too hard. Which might be counter-productive, as the greater headroom of the 6L6s (5881s) means that if you wanted a really gainy sound then you'd be tempted to crank them up louder to get 'em howling. On the other hand, you mentioned clean headroom, so maybe you tend to stay outta that zone where they compress and break up. Yeah, staying in the bottom half of the dial may make 'em safer in the X2.

I've tube-swapped in my X2 as well, but went for a matched pair of blackplate greyglass NOS RCA 6L6s, and a Mullard-made 12AX7 preamp tube. Swapped the speaker for an Eminence Copperhead, and put in a Blues Junior -sized heavy duty OT. Bliss.
