12-string Drones

Looking at the Warmoth 12-string nut options and it asks which side you want the drones on.

On my acoustic, the thinner octave strings are on the top. The standard normal gauge strings on the bottom. Are the octaves or the standards considered the drones?

IIRC, Rickenbacker puts the standard strings on top, which supposedly contributes to the unique sound of their 12-strings.
