1 3/4" Thick SG body - sound??

Just when I'd settled on the VIP body shape, it suddenly occured to me that Warmoth offer the SG in a full fat thickness.... Having played a Gibson SG once, I'd dismissed this shape as I found the tone a little 'thin' and it was definitely neck heavy.

Does the 1.75" thick body correct the balance and make it sound more like a normal body shape if there is such a thing?

Also, I think the SG only works with certain colours, and I'm not sure my cherry burst over quilt maple would work as well on a SG compared to a VIP.  Any suggestions to throw into the mix for consideration - black korina, quilt top.

You could do one in solid (opaque) red and get fancy with the fretboard. Something like a Kingwood, Zebra or Ziricote would look good. Although, I think Zebra needs a finish, in which case I'd pass on it.

I've had an SG for 28 years .. the tone was OK but the balance was always a bit neck biased .  I'm putting a flamed maple cap on the back and a Lacewood cap on the front and gibing it to my grandson.
It was trashed when I bought it for $50  , broken tuners/  pickups shot etc  .  I refurbed it many times .. time to pass it on.

I didn't know they offered it in full thickness. That's a really sweet option that should kill off the neck dive of the regular (thin) SG.
I think SGs look best in black, red, and sometimes dark blue.  I've been surprised before though.

I had an original '61 Melody Maker that eventually ended up white and looked nice. Those (or, that one) had an SG body style. Played it for years, and loved it to death.

I'm really tempted to go with the SG now - especially with a quilt maple top.

The top looks great where it meets the main body on the edges - see here....

Thats a lot thicker than a Gibby SG....which are tapered, and go from about 1-7/16 to 1-5/8 in thickness, thicker at the bottom, thinner at the neck.

The Gibson SG has its unique sustain properties - totally different from the LP design, but this may be more due to the traditionally thinner neck and smaller neck joint on the SG, and... I'm sure in part due to the thinner, lighter, body.  They are not as fat toned as the LP and not the same sustain, but they DO tend to pickup more feedback when played loud....something older LP's dont do but newer (chambered) ones do better.

the 1-3/4 body will cure the SG neck dive issue for sure.... gonna sound very different from the Gibson, by way of neck attachment... neck iteself, body... not saying its gonna sound bad, just not sound the same.

I've played a fair number of SG's... SG Specials with P90, SG Special with HB, SG standards (old), SG reissues, SG Standard new, SG Deluxe with Bigsby, and a nice SG/LP Custom.  They all were different variations on the same SG flavor - the P90 being my favorite because it has a really fat tone.

Put another way - comparing the SG to the thicker LP again - the LP sounds pretty good with 57 Classic pickups, while SG's sound way thin with the same pickups.  Its all in how that neck vibrates.

Its always been full thickness.... only recently offered in the thinner version (last 5-6 years or so)
