Making lapsteel, what features would you like?

I've built a couple lap steels myself - what features you want will depend a bit on what style you want to play with that lap steel... For blues and rock stuff, I'd use 6 strings, tuned to open G, open E, or a similar tuning, and I'd use a P90 or a humbucker, or maybe, if you don't mind the...

A BIG 1+ for free/no-upcharge 1-3/4" nut width on more neck types (Vintage Modern, baritone, 24-3/4" scale, etc.) - hey, give us sausage-fingered guys a break!  :blob7:

How many guitars do you own?

2 steelstring acoustics (Guild & Eko) 2 nylon string acoustics (Ortega & no-name) 2 Warmoth Teles 1 Epiphone Sheraton 1 Danelectro 56 Pro RI 1 Thinline Tele without a neck (currently saving up for a Warmoth neck for it) 1 Hohner Professional ST57 (lowest quality Strat copy - my first electric...

    What do you guys play?

I'm in a cover band that plays Johnny Cash, Elvis, CCR, Springsteen, Dylan, etc. I'd like to play alt.coutnry, big fan of Calexico, Richmond Fontaine, Wilco, 16 Horsepower, etc. -already found a bass player & drummer for a project doing this type of music, still looking for a 2nd guitar & singer...

    Cleanest neck single ever???

Sounds like a job for a slightly fatter Strat-type single coil... There are tons of choices available for those from various makers - frankly, I'm not a Strat player myself, so I'd better leave the recommednations to somebody else!

    Cleanest neck single ever???

Well, what kind of clean tone are you going for? Bright, jangly, warm, full, dark, jazzy, etc.? Just too many different choices... One of my favorite clean single coil neck pickup tones is what I get from my HB-sized CharlieChristian-style blade-pickup from www.vintagevibeguitars.com - very...

how useful is the "out of phase" sound

I've got a 5-way SuperSwitch in my Thinline Tele, which gives me, in addition to the 3 "regular" positons, both pickups in series (a "must have" for any guitar with 2 single coil pickups, IMHO), and both pickups in series out-of-phase; since they are in series, the volume drop is not as extreme...

    Tele with Bigsby B5

The amp is a Weber 6M45 - a JTM45 clone that I built from a kit (and modded a bit, for tighter bass); built that cab from scratch (the wood is just cheapo pine from the hardware store that I painted to look like mahogany). The cab is an old Hohner Orgaphon Box 60 - German made, from the...

Thinline Tele w/ rosewood top & Bigsby B16

OK, if you want all the dirty details.... That B16 is finicky when it comes to body dimensions - I had another nice Thinline body from another manufacturer, that I had originally planned to use - but it was like 5mm too long, so the route for the bridge pickup was too far to the front - here's...

    Rosewood-topped, Bigsby-fied Thinline Tele

Here's my new Thinline Tele, completed just a few days ago: Thinline body, rosewood top on swamp ash; had Warmoth route the neck pocket at an angle (like for a TOM bridge) - still had to add a bit of shimming, though.Finished with TruOil (at least 20 coats...) Bigsby B16, Wilkinson roller...

tung oil; how much do you wipe?

If you want to get real gloss, like on a lacquered body, you could put two or three thin coats of TruOil on top of the tung oil. I personally don't have any experience with tung oil, only with boiled linseed oil, and with pre-mixed wax/oil stuff, and let me tell you, when it comes to gloss...

    Precision vs. Jazz

Precision Bass: traditionally a wider, flatter neck. Jazz Bass: traditionally a more narrow neck (smaller nut width) Precision Bass: full, deep, fundamental sound; punchy, not too bright; great choice for more traditional rock styles, heavier stuff, country, 1960s R&B - anything where the bass...
