    Working with wenge

having finished the wenge/ash tele project, i can tell you it is one of the heaviest guitars in terms of weight i've ver had. Weighs more than the hefty LP used to own,  and on a par with the Gibson doubleneck i used to have as well -- and this is *chambered*.  i havent lived with it thru amps...

wenge top: oil or shellac or nothing?

Thanks  so much, everybody, for all  the help  on this project!  i learned a lot by reading here, learned even more by taking the plunge and doing it. For my first attempt  I can live with the results! Quick recap: body is ash back, wenge front ; even though the body was chambered, it's...

wenge top: oil or shellac or nothing?

hadnt thought of  pure tung oil  but  if you only did two coats, that might be approachable....  what was  your thinning ratio (and what do you thin it with?) is it holding up OK?

wenge top: oil or shellac or nothing?

as the other thread re my wenge/ash project doesnt seem to have much interest, let me rephrase the question, if i can: Given that a lot of folks  really recommend leaving the wenge raw, ive decided to do that  and dry micromeshed it all the way up to 12000.  cell phone pic doesnt do it justice...

Wenge/Ash Body Finishing Plan -- Will This Work?

update: tried finish it off with just the shellac, but it was much too orange, so i sanded that off with denatured alcohol and 320; consideriing it just another time consuming layer of grain fill :) Then  did a couple of layers of stain to soften the white, then went with the Watco danish...

Wenge/Ash Body Finishing Plan -- Will This Work?

Wenge/Ash Body Finishing Plan -- Will This Work?

Ok, so im finally revisiting this  project! decided to start  on the ash side; after some test scraps, i did a some Cabot pre-stain conditioner followed by a very light coat of Cabot dark walnut stain, wiped off pretty quickly. Its nice --- makes the grain pop a bit and a nice overall hue...

Wenge/Ash Body Finishing Plan -- Will This Work?

cleaning up last post to clarify and bump.... Did some experimenting with some ash test scraps, getting a feel for different steps and processes. Im really questioning the necessity, in this application, about worrying about  grain fill, since im keeping with a pretty natural look for both...

Wenge/Ash Body Finishing Plan -- Will This Work?

ok, guys, thanks for the feedback! you're almost talking me into it :) neck is  wenge with a fretless ebony board  (though the person who did it did a bad fret fill job, so i may redye the board).... the  wenge/maple board idea is an interesting  combo in and of itself, tho, soundwise...
