Another "how can I make this grain pop" post: alder + stain tele

Consider that Tru-Oil will tend to darken it a slight bit immediately, and then some slight bit more as it ages....... Poly will do that also, as well...... If you like it a bit darker, stain away, then smear a finish on it. Do you have any alder test lumber you can play around with first? I...

Another "how can I make this grain pop" post: alder + stain tele

I once ordered an "in-stock" Alder Hybrid body from Warmoth. I wanted Alder because I planned on painting the body, and didn't really care what the grain looked like. The piece I ordered was pretty light in weight, and Alder is typically a "tight-grained" wood that needs no grain filling...

Question about Ash and when to use a grain filler

Here's a pic of what I tried to describe above. This poor Hybrid got used for multiple finishing experiments, most of which failed.  :sad1: Notice the white paint in the pickup and control routes (from an earlier failed "experiment"  ). It yellowed a lot, after somewhere around 3-4 months...

Question about Ash and when to use a grain filler

I think I've done something kinda similar to what you're attempting. Can maybe provide pics tomorrow. I used light blue enamel paint all over a roasted swamp ash body & scuffed that to the point where the paint got sorta "thin/opaque-ish". Mixed up some craft store water-base paints with white &...

    1.650" Neck Width Questions

Hey, All!!! Was wondering if anyone that has received a 1.65" wide neck could possibly throw a set of calipers on it, and tell me what the width of the neck actually is at the nut? I'm wondering if the 1.65" width necks tend to run towards the "high" end of Warmoth's tolerance zone, like all 3...

How low did you get your action?

Thanks, Steve!!! The black Tusq graphite-laden nut I'm using is one that I cut, so there's likely some room for improvement. I used feeler guages to check the string height at each string with a capo between the 2nd and 3rd frets. IIRC, I set my clearance at .012"-.013" on the low (pitch-wise)...

How low did you get your action?

Ditto on that, Bagman! It would sound like someone hammering nails in a board if that were me tyring slide on something with that low of string height....... Man, you guys amaze me. Best I've gotten with the modern construction neck on my Strat/Hybrid is 3/32" (6/64", or almost 2.5mm) to be...

    Timbermate Grain Filler?

Is Crystalac compatible with most oil based finishes, like polyurethane, in particular?

A really great idea, Rgand!!!  :icon_thumright: If I can score on a used fan that's bomb-proof, I'd do that in a heartbeat!

    DupliColor Paint Finish Questions

Man, Oh Man!!! You guys got me laughin' with the Homer video (especially when Homer forgets the "new" words to the song), and the Hank Hill deal!  :toothy12: :toothy10: My kids swear "King of the Hill" was written about me, and I do hae confess, i sound pretty much like him when I talk..... ...

    DupliColor Paint Finish Questions

Well, I didn't say it was a perfect plan. It's just a plan, for now, hee hee..... And definitely subject to change......  :icon_scratch:  :confused4: I hope I'm understanding your question correctly. Maybe this will help kinda explain what my thoughts were. The tent would be set up inside my...

    DupliColor Paint Finish Questions

Well, my current thoughts are to push air in through one of the flaps/windows you see on the side, possibly with a box fan. Then have it exit diagonally out a flap/window on the opposite side. It's hard to "visualize" I guess, given the photo that got rotated 90 deg.. I had thought, kinda like...

    DupliColor Paint Finish Questions

That's an area I'm very much trying to decide what to do. I'm definitely open to suggestions. One thing I'very wondered about, and I'm sure I must be missing something  about, is why is ventilation almost always negative pressure, or sucking? Is it more efficient than positive pressure? I've...

    DupliColor Paint Finish Questions

Here''s a pic of the little portable greenhouse/she'd I spoke of above here. They lowered the price down to  $99.99. It's 8' l x 6' w x 7' h. I like the construction of this; the way it fastens together is nice. Plenty of room to do a guitar in, but I actually have a "project" where I need to...

    DupliColor Paint Finish Questions

Thanks for that!!!  I actually already tried the Naptha, and it did minimize it somewhat. Which makes it fall into that "I may just buff it, live with it, and learn from it" category...... Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. It would fit right in one of the 12'x30' bays of my barn. I...
