You're probably right, I was only thinking of trying some used pickups to see what works best.  But I guess you can look for them anywhere, (EBAY)... If the PU Ben ends up with doesn't suit his needs, then it might be a good core if he wants to attempt a DIY winding.  There is a lot of good info...
