    L5s progress

oops meant water-based lacquer. It's got the same properties as nitro ( 100% burn in etc ) but doesn't fry your brain.

    L5s progress

Yeah I've sprayed it with waterbased nitro now, it's all nice and glossy :) Still need to put it together though, will post pics when I do.

    LSR Nut Problems

A bit of candle-wax on the screw helps. I've assembled a warmoth N4-like a few weeks ago ( I've been too lazy to post pictures but will try to get around doing it ) with a padouk neck. Padouk is darmn hard as well, I got a nice set of blisters from screwing the neck, but I did find the wax...

    Planning a L5S, advice welcome

Hey, Funny that this got ressuscitated. I did actually build the guitar ( although it's not completely finished yet ). There is a thread in the "work in progress" section with pictures of the sunburst on the body etc. Since then I have sprayed it with waterbased nitro ( from stewmac, amazing...

    putting in bridge stud inserts

I covered the body around the holes with slim cardboard and hammered them gently and carefully with a wooden hammer. I wouldn't particularly recommend it but if you're careful it does the trick. Also don't forget the ground wire if it's a hardtail bridge. Hope this helps.

Peavey Custom Shop - is this plagiarism??

Regarding Crook and Anderson I have to disagree, all they do is get the body or necks precut by some manufacturers like Warmoth or USACG probably because they have no interest in doing the CNC and machining themselve as the initial investment in the machines wouldn't be profitable. And frankly...

    fret dress

Also while I have nothing against doing the maths ( in fact I work in a heavily mathematic engineering field ) for the theoritical limits, in reality neither the geometry or the measurements are exact so I trust more what I see and hear than what the ideal model says. I've got a fender american...

    fret dress

I did do some measurements, this is not my first setup either. Relief a 7h string is 0.007" so I wouldn't call that too much. I've tried having a bit more and a bit less and this gave me the best compromise on the neck. String height about 4/64" on the bass side, 3/64" on treble. When I dressed...

    fret dress

I've finished the guitar and played it for a while it turns out it did need a fret dress. I had very bad buzzes between the 16h and 21st frets with a medium-low action. Tried seating the 21st and 22nd frets, no luck. So I decided to level them. Turns out the frets between 16th and 20 included...

    wilkinson bushings

This may sound like a stupid question but are wilikinson bushings supposed to be pressed / hammered flush to the body or slightly above ? Mine are about 1mm above and don't seem to want to go further down.

    DIY stompboxes

Perfboards are ok but they can be a pain to solder and even more to cut the lines on the lined ones, you're never quite sure if the thing is actually well cut or if there is still some contact. Etching PCBs is quite easy to do as well and much cleaner to solder. I built a 12ax7 overdrive some...

    fret dress

Ok thanks guys. Congrats to Warmoth then for managing such precision and consistent results, I don't think there are many people who can claim to be able to press frets perfectly and not even need them to be dressed  !  :rock-on:

    fret dress

Do you guys generally have to dress the frets on new warmoth necks to get a low, buzz free action ? I'm getting close to finishing my strat and I'm wondering if I need to prepare myself psychologically to have to do it :)
