Thanks for the info! Yes, a hard lesson to learn! Damn.
Again the function is great but I will probably replace these and will not use Hipshot on a Warmoth neck again, because
1) Huge pegs look out of proportion, unnaturally big on this headstock
2) Universal Mounting Plate (which I like)...
Went to install my new black open locking Hipshots on my Soloist neck last night. Elected to use their Universal Mounting Plate (UMP) to avoid drilling any holes for now in case I end up going with Gotoh, and it had the unexpected and underadvertised benefit of lining the tuners up perfectly-...
Slight thread hijack here, but do any of you know just how well the Gotoh locking tuners fit the Warmoth Gotoh routed holes?
I'd like to think that's a silly question but I don't want to assume anything.
Thanks in advance.
Update:
I have Gotoh (non-locking) tuners on my mid 90's Samick Blues Saraceno TV Twenty. I tried one of those in my Warmoth neck and found it only very slightly tighter fitting than the Hipshot.
I was pretty set on going Gotoh to be sure the fit would be right, and I've always, always had...
Press-fit- meaning you need a hydraulic press?
And you say not an option now because the Gotoh holes are too large?
Lastly, you agree the Hipshots are probably too small for these holes? Or am I being overly A.R.?
Thanks again.
Thanks Cagey.
I got Hipshot open backed locking tuners. I took the locking advice.
My problem is, from what I'd read I gathered the Hipshots would work great with the Gotoh dimension holes. That's not the case. Sloppy.
To me, a proper fitting tuner's shaft should be making contact, or...
SOOOO- all the parts are in. And I'm pleased...
...except- the Hipshots are quite sloppy fitting (to me). Ugh.
I really want to do this RIGHT, but I'm so damn tired of waiting. Again the holes are Gotoh. The slop might not bother some but I don't want any play in there putting stress on...
OH! Didn't know I could do vintage buttons! It's that curvy trapezoid thing that makes my eyes upchuck.
Well that may settle it.
And no long-term concerns about dust and whatnot getting in the open backs?
Again a bit embarrassed to be so image-centric but I hate the shape of the tuning pegs on the Hipshots. I do very much like the idea of supporting a USA company, but gawd I hate that look.
I'm leaning Gotoh unless someone steers me elsewhere. I see the Sperzels are considerably more...
Thanks all. Looking into Hipshot. As I mentioned earlier I've already spent waaaay too much money for my situation just on the body and neck (neck especially) so it'll be awhile on the other parts, so I've got time to research for sure.
I do know how big one sixty fourth of an inch is. I just figured if you're going to do something right you might as well do it as right as possible, not close. And as a Newbie I have no way of knowing whether yours or anyone else's advice is based on experience... Just because somebody has...
I can't use Sperzels since I had it routed for Gotoh (or I could, but Sperzels are 25/64 where Gotoh are 13/32, so there would be 1/64" of play. I'm spending way too much money on this thing to have anything not quite right).
So I'm looking at these locking Gotoh tuners, though I hate the look...
Thank you. I'll open my mind on this topic. Especially since the benefit of increased likelihood of tuning stability re: locking tuners surely should outweigh whatever (imagined?) benefit I think I get from having plenty of string winds on the post
Still would be interested in any answers to...
You want just ENOUGH break angle, in general. The issue is friction (or main issue anyway).
Look at your tele and how the neck is scooped out behind the nut. Visualize a post as low as your high E post, but in the place of your low E post. Look at the angle that would create- very sharp. ...
