What's your thoughts on a lacquered neck?

Thanks for the info. I'm working on a set neck explorer body bass now. Four coats of truoil so far on the neck. I liked the feel of the rifle stock I did last year.

What's your thoughts on a lacquered neck?

You're killing me here. I've been known to stare at shiny objects. Plan C is to seal the neck with clear and 'paint' some color on to match the face. I have two cans of colortone clear left. The 36$ for the amber at stewmac makes my wallet quiver.

What's your thoughts on a lacquered neck?

Before I commit, I'd like some thoughts on a nitro finished neck. Feel, durability, etc.?

    Maple neck stain fail,help!

I think Moxie is a very polite way of pointing out my poor judgement. I laughed about your post as I tried to find a piece of 400 grit in a pile of paper I never labeled.

    Maple neck stain fail,help!

Good advice, spud. It's a matter of principle at this point. No piece of wood is going to out smart me. That being said, plan B failed. While I regroup I'll work on the next project.

    Maple neck stain fail,help!

That was the line my dad used. Hide your mistakes or show them off. This neck is reliced in all the wrong places.

    Maple neck stain fail,help!

Quick update. I tested Transtint over poly, lacquer seal and thinned white glue on a maple board. No good results when compared to the raw wood. Then I put a coat of tinted shellac over everything. That evened out the color very nice except for the glue sample. After one coat of truoil you could...

    Maple neck stain fail,help!

Thanks for the info. I watched a YouTube video about that. It's good hear from someone that has done it. The guess the smart move would be to test a board with a seal coat next to tinted raw wood. I have been fooling around with this project for years. BTW what happened to the gallery on the...

    Maple neck stain fail,help!

I'm going to try tinting the truoil as a test. I read somewhere transtint does not mix with truoil..or other oil based stuff without a solvent. . The list goes on. I wonder if tinted shellac would be good under truoil. I tried to keep all the surfaces flat while sanding so there are a few edges...

    Maple neck stain fail,help!

I'll try. I'm not good with the high tech stuff. Seems to have loaded. Note the white area is brighter in better light. The amber has been wiped down with alcohol. The black spots are bare wood.

    Maple neck stain fail,help!

I am refinishing the back of the neck on an old Pbass. I sanded the neck and back of the headstock leaving the OEM face alone. The plan was to tint and truoil the neck. The plan worked great on the edge and back of the headstock, but the neck would not take transtint dye in spots that still had...

Lacquer, Enamel, Acrylic, Urethane, Alkyd, Nitrocelulose, etc… can someone provide a FAQ?

I have a tear in my eye reading your post. My second fail on the same body was finding out the color coat did not adhere to the primer. I found that out after I dropped the body and damaged the edge.

Lacquer, Enamel, Acrylic, Urethane, Alkyd, Nitrocelulose, etc… can someone provide a FAQ?

On a basswood body paint would look the best. If you had a fancy wood, a film finish like truoil would be easier. Temp and humidity may cause a problem with lacquer. Dust is bad with anything. I watched a three part video on the stew mac channel on youtube that may be helpful. Keep it simple on...

Lacquer, Enamel, Acrylic, Urethane, Alkyd, Nitrocelulose, etc… can someone provide a FAQ?

It's good to have friends like that. I had a body painted by a guy I knew in a body shop. Looked like fresh blacktop. That was the first fail on the project.

Lacquer, Enamel, Acrylic, Urethane, Alkyd, Nitrocelulose, etc… can someone provide a FAQ?

I ended up buying the book "under standing wood finishing" by Bob Flexner after I made all my mistakes. I failed big time with Duplicolor then repainted with Stewmac spray cans.
