Gator Grip 1.5 mm and D'Andrea ProPlec (also 1.5 mm) I feel they give me the widest range of attack dynamics. Plus they make my Martin bark like all get out!
I'm also groovin' on these semi-solid colors. A little more masking but with the dark grain filler it should come through...

Please comment on this color sample. Cabot semi-transparent stain. The dilemma is that surface prep would be way too much work due to the previous paint, so I do want to mask some imperfections, hence the semitranparent...
Well, I played it today. I finally stopped thinking about all the ways I could screw it up and just put the thing together. I ended up having to shim the neck, but it ended up setting up really nicely with very little effort and adjustment. I can't decide on a finish and on whether or not to use...
By 3 piece do you mean two pieces of the top laminate and 3 body? From the pictures you posted showing the seam in the top laminate, I think that is the misunderstanding here. Isn't that just the bookmatching of the top?
Ok. I have filled the grain (I used plaster of paris tinted with black artist's acrylic, nice look, kinda hard to sand back) and am into a practice fitting of hardware. I used a long straight edge and aligned the neck using the pickup routing for reference. Now I need to work out the tremolo...
