My Warmoth build

Ok so here is what I have going on from the good people at Warmoth.  I am at the 4 week part of my wait and i'm getting pretty anxious waiting for my body......  They told me 4-6 and I guess they are taking their time on my body

So I ordered a Lefty WGD in maple with a flame maple top.  I had them put in an ebony accent stripe, routed for two humbuckers and a recessed tune o matic with the arched string through holes.  I also had them hog out the control cavity but no holes for pots or switches.

Here is how I plan to customize and set it up.  I am going to inlay an abalone 'purfling' on the top with some about 1/4" in from the edge of the side radius sandwiched between two thin strips of ebony.  I will also inlay a center strip on the back with some abalone and some wood inlay strips I have here a walnut and maple diamond pattern.  I will toss the plastic back cover in favor of a wood back cover probably cherry as I have a couple of furniture grade sheets of cherry plywood perfect for making back covers.  Dimarzio super 3 and a Dimarzio PAF for pickups someone gave me as payment for some guitar work a few years ago.  I haven't decided which pickup I will put where, I might even change my mind on the pickups but I have these for now they will be fine.  I am going to put a LR Baggs T-bridge on it which has 6 individual piezo saddles for an acoustic tone along with their Control-X module to blend the humbuckers and the acoustic bridge signals together.  It will have a TRS effects loop in it like Jerry G's guitars had which sends the signal out of the guitar into your effects and back into the guitar before the volume pot, then another jack out to the amp.  I have set up all of my guitars like that and it does work even without a unity gain buffer like Jer used.

As far as a neck goes I am about 99% certain that I will go with a flame maple LP neck and a maple fretboard with some really cool inlay that I found online as well.  I won't be buying a neck for a while as the funds need to come in.  But these are my plans so far.  I also am glad I will have a good template for this body shape as I might build a right handed jerry shape to sell, but I will scratch build the righty.  I basically shelled out the money so I could get a good template to build this shape on my own, I will trace it as soon as it comes and make a lexan template of the body to use later.  I am eventually going to build a couple of neck through Jerrys but this again will take a little while.

I figure I'm not making any money doing anything else at the moment, so why not try to build some guitars....

EDIT:  Thought since I figured out how to add pics I would add some pics of the inlay I plan to add to this guitar....

Black lines on this will be an accent stripe of ebony-abalone (most likely paua abalam)-ebony

Sounds pretty sweet!  I'd go PAF in the neck or maybe a Super 2 in the neck.  Jerry did love those Super 2's  :icon_biggrin:

Sorry to bump this I just wanted to show off my new uploading skills I put up some pics of the inlay plans for my guitar...

The outline I think will be nice, but the thing around pickups and bridge think not... nice inlay you chose!

I'm still undecided on the inlay around the pickups, the more I look at it the more I agree with you.  I'm gonna do some sort of inlay around the string ferrules, but I'm not sure what yet.  Kinda to mimick a tailpiece so the eye has something to stop at when it follows the strings down the body.  Again this is all on paper (well on a computer) you know how things change when the lumber is on the workbench.....  I appreciate your input Mr. Tele.

I am hoping to get a neck from the Turtle unfretted so I can do the inlay.  I wonder if they do this.  I have never done a whole fret job on a neck, I was kinda hoping that I could get a neck without the frets, inlay it, sand it and send it back for the frets.  Does anybody have any idea if Warmoth will do this for me or not?  I am not looking forward to sanding between an already fretted fingerboard, I have done that and it really sucks....not to mention how hard it is to run a router on a neck with frets installed, I am just asking for a major screw up doing that...Maple is pretty unforgiving when it comes to inlay, you can't really hide your mistakes like you can on ebony or rosewood.  Dark woods you can mix up some tinted  epoxy and fill in your imperfections.  Maple it will show.  And I do pretty much have my heart set on a maple fingerboard.  If they won't I guess I'll order a neck and pull the frets out and learn how to do a fret job.  I can probably find a neck on the showcase and save some jingle that way.  I have been looking on ebay for a neck maybe I'll go that route if W can't help me out.....

Do a inlay on the red zone on this drawn, will look killer!

EDIT: I'm pretty sure you can't send the neck back to have it fretted after you inlayed it... And they don't do fret jobs at all, they just hammer it and take the cutty edges and round a little the points of the frets, no nivelling...

I am getting to that inlay......  That is gonna be my first inlay that I will design myself I have always stuck to stuff I could get already but I am gonna take a stab at it.  A friend of mine suggested a flower that mimmicks a vagina.  I really like that idea (believe it or not so does my wife as long as I don't make it 'pornographic')  I would post pics, but I think you can imagine what I am talking about, I don't wanna get kicked off the forum for posting something like that.  Kind of something along the lines of the animation in Pink Floyd's The Wall movie of the flowers getting busy...
